Model Y Is Here! - All Questions are Finally Answered

First up we have some detailed Model Y Photos from Eric Weaver. He shows the Model Y interior, Model Y exterior, Model Y under storage compartments, Model Y cargo space, Model Y wheels, and more!
Then we have lots of confirmations thanks to the Tesla Model Y Owner’s Manual, and Model Y delivery recipient SilverSmith on Tesla Motors Club.
The Tesla Model Y officially has a Powered Hatchback. To open the Model Y liftgate, you can use the open button on the touchscreen, double click trunk button on the key fob, touch the trunk button in the app, or when it’s unlocked, press the switch under the trunk handle
On top of this, you can customize the opening height on the Model Y liftgate for lower ceilings.
To do so, open the liftgate, manually power or raise it to the desired height, press and hold the liftgate button for two seconds, confirm with the chime, and it’ll remember that position for the future. Helpful in low ceiling situations.
Here are some detailed Model Y measurements for the Model Y Trunk space:
Hatch opening is 27.5” tall (698.5mm)
Along the top of the 2nd-row seats is 45” (1143mm)
Center Seat width is 11.5” (292mm). The post takes up around 2.5”, so if you’re putting something there, that’ll cut into space
Depth from 2nd-row ground to the edge of the trunk is 44”
Wheel hub to wheel hub in the trunk is 37” (640mm)
Depth of Top of second-row seats to the back is 33”
84” from the passenger seat as forward as possible to hatchback lip
73” from driver seat as back as possible to the hatchback
92” diagonal from the back of passenger seat to the opposite corner of the trunk
Then the Model Y under storage has two compartments:
First is in the very back, very deep. The second is closer to the seats, still fairly deep, but maybe 1/4 or 1/3rd of the large under storage compartment. On top of this there are side storage compartments as well
The Model Y Frunk is not powered, but is larger than the Model 3 and has a donut seal
The Tesla Model Y officially includes wireless charging.
Model Y Wireless Charging:
-Qi-enabled charger at up to 15W of power, room for two phones side by side.
-Charges slower when two phones are on there.
There is also officially USB-C in the Model Y:
-Single USB C port in the front, single USB A. Comes with a wireless charging pad included that uses that port
-Two USB-C ports in the back
-12V power socket under the armrest in the center console
The Model Y second-row seats all fold flat.
-They all fold flat, independently, powered to go down
-64/40 split to fold them down, but you can customize that. Left seat holds the center with a post
-Looking in from the back, the left and center seats fold down when you use the bottom on the left
-You can also only fold down the center if you choose, with the switch on the back of the center seat
-Or just fold the right seat with the switch on the right.
The Model Y has power folding back seats as well.
-You can fold them using the switches in the trunk.
-Second-row seats are the same width as the Model 3 at 51 1/4 inches
-Center seat has a headrest that goes up and down
The Model Y heated seats are included in the front and rear.
No Model Y Homelink included - Have to be ordered after the fact for $300
No Model Y cargo shelf or Model Y cargo cover, or attachments to install it there later
-Aftermarket solution
No Model Y towing. There is a spot where it looks like you could add a Model Y tow hitch or tow receiver, but there is no hidden receiver hitch there.
The Seats in the Model Y vs Model 3 sit 3.5” taller.
The Model Y build quality seems to be improved with fewer panel gaps, and quieter road noise.
There is officially No Model Y heated steering wheel. Just the same wheel as Model 3.
Charging bag only includes the standard 120V plug, no NEMA 14-50 like the Model 3 used to
No AM Radio, but FM is included
No track mode
The Model Y also includes a Heat pump which should improve efficiency in colder climates.

Ryan, the HEATED STEERING WHEEL cannot be installed because the 'imitation leather' will very easily degrade. You can buy a genuine leather option which makes it possible to install the heater.

I am a little disappointed that the model y doesn't have a couple of features that my current suv has. I currently drive a 2016 hyunda I Tucson and I was waiting for the electric revolution to take place so I could make the switch. Overall, I think the model y is awesome but I still am perplexed why certain features are not in the car. First, why is there still no fear cross traffic alert system. Please correct me if I am wrong. This feature on my tuscon has saved my ass a handful of times. Secondly, to hear that there is no automatic rear hatch opening is a little disappointing. Granted this is not the end of the world but it is a nice feature to have considering that this vehicle currently is 50k.
JRock4572001
JRock4572001 7 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw in regards to rear cross traffic alert system, it is a safety system on my Tuscon. As I reverse out of a spot the system will alert me if a oncoming car is coming and from which direction. The system will beep and arrows will show up on my infotainment showing which way the car is coming from. The system will also pick up pedestrians who walk behind your car. Most cars have this function as a standard safety feature and that is why I am so surprised that the Teslas don't. I have asked multiple sales people at the Tesla store and all I get are strange looks.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
JRock4572001 ahhh I see.
JRock4572001
JRock4572001 7 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw yes, you are misunderstanding what I am trying to say. You stated that the trunk does not have an "automatic" open function. Right now if my hands are full I can walk up to the back of my Tuscon with the keys in my pocket and after three beeps the trunk will automatically open without me having to put anything down. Ford for example has the kick motion.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
There is an insane amount of traffic alert systems in the Model Y. Not sure about the specific one you're mentioning, but Tesla's are the most advances with driver assistance features. Also, the rear hatch does open automatically with the button on the app, or the button on the touchscreen, or the button on the hatchback. Both of those things you mentioned are absolutely in the Model Y unless I'm misunderstanding.

Now I feel very pleased with my Ford Everest, got all these features plus more and can tow quite a large load. Don't get me wrong, I am very much pro ev but in South Africa where I live it'll take a long time to arrive (our Marxist government ruined the power utility completely) let alone be common on the road. I do hope Tesla does well since they are so innovative.
Andre Fouche
Andre Fouche 7 oy oldin
Ryan Shaw Yes I hope so but realistically it will take decades for Africa because the politicians steal all the money that is supposed to go into infrastructure and because of the Marxist philosophy they will not allow the privatization of the power utilities. Sad really. We in South Africa had the cheapest electricity and the power utility was world class then the ANC took over and took it from world class to one of the worst in the world by shear incompetence and theft. Situation in almost all Sub-Saharan countries are the same so Africa will provide a ICE market for Toyota for many years to come.

sleeknub
sleeknub 7 oy oldin
Corollas can have a towing hitch added, so it would be totally insane if you weren’t even able to add a hitch to the Model Y. It’s also insane that there is no AM radio. Traffic/highway advisories are on AM radio (at least in my state, and some others I have been to), so if you are driving a Model Y you are out of luck apparently. Looks like you won’t be able to fit a sheet of plywood in the back with the hatch closed, but I’m guessing you can with it open (at an angle).

You missed another upgrade the Y has that the 3 does not: rear 12V charge port. You can see it in your video at 9:10 mark. Great job as usual. Love your channel.

Ahh yeah that's a great one. Didn't realize the Model 3 didn't have that. Thanks for watching!

Fits better to european requirements than Model 3. However, no towing is a dissapointment. Heat pump is great.
Ryan Shaw

Yeah, I think we may hear more about towing soon

What is "chromedelete"?
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
The Model 3 has chrome handles, and many people don't like it, so they did a process of wrapping the handles called "chrome delete". The Model Y comes standard without chrome

No heated steering wheel? On the performance? Sorry I live in a cold climate and Tesla just lost a sale.

Unfortunately not. Model S does I believe

Hope they do include a parcel shelf someday...really is cheap to not have it. Also would help reducing road noise.

@Ryan Shaw probably...depending on ways to be able to mount a solution. Like always with Tesla... we'll just have to be patient and wait 😉.

Electrically folding rear seats so you don’t have to use your muscles - that’s probably the best way to summarize all things that are wrong with current new vehicles. You will have to wait for hours for the damn things to go down while you’re outside, probably while it‘s raining and you‘re trying to put some heavy boxes in. Why not use standard spring operated folding seats which go down in a second by pulling a lever?
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
They flop down immediately. Or you can pull them down yourself

What no cargo cover ! Good then I won't have to store it in my loft ! They usually rattle around and are a pain, so they go in the loft !

In your comments you mentioned a 64/40 rear seat split. It should read 60/40. But, it's actually a 40/20/40 Split, cause you can lower only the centre 20% seat if desired.

OK. No. The height of the hatch opening is not good. You can't fit a road bike in there Vertically without remove the wheels. Nope. Not good. We need something like the Nissan Serena. Just don't curve the cabin down Tesla! Also, I would prefer having the whole cabin then 'boxes'. For the 2 seats at the back, just fold them up to the side! Not down!
