First up, I apologize for my dangling hair. Feel free to hit me hard in the comments.
Among the questions Tesla answered today are:
When will Tesla Model Y be Built ?
When Is Tesla Model Y Coming ?
When is Tesla Model Y Available ?
Tesla Model Y Black Wheels ?
Tesla Model Y Wheel Options ?
Tesla Model Y New Wheels ?
Tesla Model Y Range ?
Tesla Model Y EPA Range ?
Tesla Model Y Range km ?
Tesla Model Y Long Range ?
Model Y Delivery Date ?
Tesla Model Y Release Date ?
Tesla Model Y Delivery Date ?
Tesla Model Y Estimated Delivery ?
And MUCH more.
According to the Q4 report, Model Y production ramp began in January, ahead of schedule.
The Tesla Model Y website in the US official says that “First deliveries begin in March 2020”. Model Y deliveries in Canada will happen mid-2020.
Next, the Model Y Range has increased drastically since the announcement.
You’ll notice that the Long range Tesla Model Y RWD is no longer an option on the website to order. Not sure what will happen to customers who pre-ordered that.
The price of the AWD Model Y has gone up again by $990. So The Long Range AWD is now $52,990, and the Performance actually went down to $60,990 from $61,000. So good news! $10 off.
Previously, the RWD LR was 300 miles or 483 Km, and the AWD LR was 280 miles or 451km. Now the LR AWD and performance will get a massive 315 miles or 507km. This is only 7 miles less than then Model 3 LR AWD, and I’m so excited.
Thank you commenters who encouraged me to switch to the AWD. It looks like it was definitely a good decision. 35 more miles than they announced in the LR AWD! Incredible. 315 is amazing, and I’m so excited about that.
The standard Tesla Model Y wheels are now the 19” Gemini wheels. Then for an extra $2000, you can get the 20” induction wheels.
Then, if you go for the performance Model Y WITH the upgrade package, optional, and free, which is interesting, your range will decrease by about 35 miles or 56km, down to the announced 280. But in turn, you’ll receive a top speed of 155mph (250km/h) instead of 145mph (233km/h), the 21” uberturbine wheels, performance brakes, lowered suspension, and aluminum alloy pedals.
The Model Y Seven Seater will be available in 2021.
The Full self-driving page has unfortunately been updated to look like the Model 3 page, so it now says “coming later this year” Recognize and respond to traffic lights and stop signs and automatic driving on city streets.
Other than that, we’re still waiting to hear about safety on the Model Y.
Overall I’m very excited about all of these Model Y updates. Basically, all the rumors were true besides people running with the idea that Canadian deliveries would be first.
It still remains to be seen what exactly will happen for people who ordered the LR RWD. Hopefully, Tesla fulfills those orders, and then just stops producing it because the range of the AWD is so good? Not really sure, but it would definitely suck for people who ordered the RWD if they not are forced to upgrade AWD for $4990 more, or downgrade to the standard range which now says early 2021 for production.
In any case, great updates today from Tesla on the Model Y, and we’re a little over a month away from when we should see first deliveries. So hopefully I get mine in April or may to be conservative? We’ll see. I’ll definitely keep you posted on the entire process of getting my Model Y, so make sure you’re subscribed to this channel to stay up to date on everything Model Y related. I’ll be making a ton of videos of the car once I get mine.

Ryan, I had an idea. In this video you state that no one knows how many orders there are for the Model Y. I wonder if the order number might be sequential and give a clue as to the number of cars that are in the pipeline. My order number is RN113240234 (ordered on February 3, 2020). I doubt that they have received 113,240,234 orders. But, if you compare my number to yours, might we deduce how many orders there might be?
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Roland Penttila i think they’re random. Mine starts with 109 and ends with 61. Every number is different
Andrew Dubas

These prices are outrageous. For someone who is debt free except for my house and only pay cash for cars. There is no way I would ever consider a car that is this expensive. An extreme waste of money. EV has a long way to go as it's not cost effective even when gas is considered for ICE.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Cost of ownership is better than you think, but it’s still a stretch for the average person. It’ll be a process, but eventually EV’s will be down in cost and make sense for everyone. Every product has to go through the expensive phase first.

It does! Unless you do the “performance upgrade” package in which case it drops to 280

Have you noted Elon’s comments on “foundational update” to FSD software. I think that this explains the lack of updates of late. They may be taking a step back to be able to achieve FSD more easily and better. When that is complete we should more progress quickly. Ryan Shaw

Yeah, unfortunately it’s not eligible yet. I believe that once production begins, they will allow the referral codes to be used. I’ve heard of people calling Tesla to add the code once delivery is being scheduled, and I hope that works out.

When/Where can we find information regarding the RWD. And, if they fulfill only what was ordered, would it be considered a "rare" vehicle? Not happy that Tesla has not addressed this issue.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
On Tesla’s FAQ it says “production is not scheduled at this time”, but at the same time, RWD pre-order holders have reached out to Tesla and Tesla has said that they will be fulfilling those orders. Not much official word from the company in a statement or anything though

Hi Ryan, I'm a state right now not being able to decide on which Tesla to buy.....(1) Should I order a Model Y or (2) Should I buy a used Model X? My configurations for the Model Y are AWD LR, Black/Black, 20" wheel, FSD = Aprox. $63K. I have seen few Model X's on Tesla website that are less than the price I'll be paying a the Model Y. The Model X's I have seen or can afford is the 2016 75D. I have seen prices as low as $54K (with less than 50K miles on the odometer.......Includes 4 year/50K miles + whatever is left on the batteries warranty. What are your honest thoughts?

Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
If you haven’t already, I’d go to a Tesla store and sit in the Model X and then the model 3. The model X is spacious, but to me the interior feels a little dated. The model Y will be 75% the same as the model 3, so you can get a general sense of the interior and tech included there, but just know that the model Y will be a good deal larger than that. If it were me, I’d personally go for the model Y

I would rather Tesla take plenty of time to get self-driven right rather than just release. Need to take the long view on that.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Yeah, I think the issue is for people who already paid $7000 for it a year ago and it said “coming later this year”. The longer they wait to deliver, the more customers will be upset about the purchase. Even though, I’m my opinion, navigate on autopilot is already worth it for me
G-Force

Comparing Model Y to the 2020 Toyota hybrid Highlander. Similar pricing. How is the seat comfort in Tesla and does it do Apple Car Play ?
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Well I haven’t been in a Model Y, but they’re the same seats as the Model 3 on risers. So the seats are comfortable and they sit higher which is usually people’s only complaint about the Model 3 seats (possibly solved in the Model Y). And it doesn’t have car play, but it does integrate with their own software for phone call, and voice texting. It also has built In maps and such.
G-Force
G-Force 8 oy oldin

Ken Shouldice
Ken Shouldice 8 oy oldin
Hey Ryan, thanks for the update. I did not notice the changes to the performance variants :( I would love a faster Model Y. But I did not like the hardware upgrade. Those big tires are just stupid, lowered suspension is a downgrade, and I simply don't value the brakes, pedals or spoiler. Be careful what you ask for,... I was telling people I would pay money not to get that hardware. I got excited when the Model 3 started selling a performance software update for $2K. Now it looks like the stealth performance upgrade is $8K,.. at least I only pay $0 to not get that hardware,,.... BIZARRE!!! This will be hard for me, $2K OK, $8K?! Does anyone know if that has any different hardware? or is it just a software upgrade?
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
You’re welcome, and thanks for watching! And yeah the performance option is a little odd. I think it has a slightly better powertrain and such to make it go faster, but other than that, mostly software? Could also be all software. I’d personally do the AWD with the $2k upgrade (assuming that comes)

Having read the fine print, Tesla can simply refund deposits to customers whose reserved vehicle will not be made. Hopefully they offer them the option of changing their order so they don’t lose their place in line. There are no economies of scale in appeasing those who wish to purchase a vehicle that had been discontinued before it was ever produced. Onward and upward. That’s why Tesla works. Next time: Read the fine print.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Yeah, but that’s pretty standard fine print. It still remains to be seen if they’ll actually do that and disappoint a lot of people who pre-ordered. I still think they might do it. Just a standard range with a bigger battery pack. Probably not too hard for them to produce depending on how many they have

Excellent Job. Yes all good news. I think you may be optimistic on when you will get yours. I ordered my AWD, white, white, FSD on May 5th. Seven weeks after launch. How many pre-orders are there? 100,000? Maybe. So I maybe the 50,000th. You would be later, How many cars will they make in the first three months to end of March? A run rate of 12,000/Month would be good after build up. So January to April is unlikely to be more than 30,000 cars. Then, if we re lucky 12,000/month. So i may get mine (50,000) in June. You may be 80,000th in line so yours would pop out three months later. Too many variables to be sure. But your bets have been on the money up to now so can you support your hope of getting yours in May (I think you said May). It would nice if you would gather some data and do a delivery prediction video.

Such a pitty the LR RWD isnt available anymore. It was the one I was going for - the one I was going for as Model 3 which then was discontinued last summer too!! So now they've squeezed 35 miles more out of the LR AWD, but like the Model 3 they might be able to squeeze 25 additional miles in the LR RWD, which was the same difference between M3 LR RWD and M3 LR AWD!! I would still go with that....! Bottom line: The Model Y still can't be ordered here in Denmark yet, so maybe the LR RWD will be available when they open up for preorders....

4:30 -- This is what happened to us and our M3 dreams. We expected to be able to buy a US$44k LR M3 *cough* 2017 Elon *cough* but would have been forced to choose a $50k M3 at the time when tax incentives were still available. At this point we decided that our 24 kWh e-Golf would do for a few more years. We'll look at MY but there are now (and will be) many good alternatives that still benefit from the rather important incentive. Tesla is still going to blow it out of the water, so it's all good.

Hmm. I’m not doubting your experience, but I’ve heard from the vast majority of tesla owners who only see slightly less. Ex: after a year of intense driving only losing 5 miles of range. 50 miles is extreme, and it would be worth doing a calibration on your car to see why. And it’s true that EPA is the best standard to go by, but still isn’t 100% accurate.

The reduced miles on the performance with 21" wheels is because of the weight of the wheels, my model 3 dropped miles when I switched from 18"s to staggered 20", its like adding 400lbs to the car when you do a rotational weight calculation.

A 120v outlet is only going to give you about 4 miles per hour of charging. I only paid $150 for an electrician to put a 240v in my garage which will give you 15-30 miles per hour of charge based on amps
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Yeah it helps with charging a lot. Also cheaper to charge. I feel like I’ll need the 240 circuit if I’m charging up a lot of miles frequently, but I’m curious to see what I end up needing

He didn’t mention, but I imagine that chrome delete will be the standard, and changing it will be an aftermarket 3rd party thing to do (the opposite as the model 3)

@Ryan Shaw So yes, thank you for the km! (Europe/Belgium). Btw, I made a LR RWD reservation. Still no changes in my build on my Belgian account (RWD and 18" wheels still mentioned).

Ryan Shaw Also that 1000/week story was reported back in December. I think he is already expecting 1000/week in spring which aligns with his earlier delivery schedule pushed up from the summer
Spiro Mellis
Spiro Mellis 8 oy oldin
Ryan Shaw possibly. Just looking at the model 3 production amount they were at 9766 in Q1 2018. So about 3000 per month. Then the following quarter ramped up to 28k and 53k after. I would expect to match if not beat that production performance based on the reuse of components
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Spiro Mellis well they said 1000/wk by the middle of 2020, so I would estimate much less personally
Spiro Mellis
Spiro Mellis 8 oy oldin
Ryan Shaw I’m estimating that they will have produced 100K model Y’s by July and around 185-200k by October

Damn , I drive an AWD Honda and AWD Subaru. I want AWD without all that horsepower. I would have rather and 200 less horsepower and 50 more miles of range.
mark marcinik
mark marcinik 8 oy oldin
Josef V -Nope F=M*A . Increase mass increase the energy used. Regenerative braking only recovers what has already been used to create the A. And the amount of regen is controlled by how much you energize the stator.
mark marcinik
mark marcinik 8 oy oldin
Ryan Shaw : more horsepower means more motor weight and more batteries which decreases . Range. Unlike gas cars electric cars Do not become lighter depending how much “energy “ is left in the tank.

This is a common misunderstanding of petrol car drivers. Horsepower means better Recuberation for an EV, too. With less hp you would use your real brakes more often.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Well you don’t have to use all the horsepower haha.

There was a screen shot from Tesla chat from a user on the Tesla forums that confirms Tesla will deliver the LR RWD orders. The chat says we will see a communication in a few weeks. Tesla will make and deliver LR RWD cars to people that have a current reservation. 7 seat version RWD will still be delivered in 2021. I have a RWD, 5 seat on order and they upgraded my wheels from 19 in sport wheels to 20 in induction wheels at no extra charge. My order still says long range rear wheel drive so I hope this clears up the confusion.

You’re dreaming if you think a factory will tool up for RWD standard model Y production just to build a few thousand cars then stop. 🤦🏻‍♂️ That’s not how car manufacturers work. You should know this as everyone had to wait for the cheap model 3 RWD.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Erik Deister most people with RWD pre orders spoke to tesla and they said they’ll be producing them. I’m not sure either way, but we’ll see
Erik Deister

Ryan Shaw they are not going to ramp up production for a few pre order RWD cars then shut shut it down again to build the actual for sale AWD cars. Get with it

When I go to stare at my reservation, I notice that I do not have the 20" wheels anymore. They've changed them to 21" oooobertuurrbiine. Also, I did not get that super massive $10 discount, on my original quoted price. Hopefully when we get closer to delivery, I can make a change to the wheels. Would prefer to have increased range, over a higher top speed. I'll take 0-60 in the mid 3's alll day..
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 9 oy oldin
Yeah, hopefully that can all be updated when delivery is being processed
Sid Burgess

Do we think that the performance upgrade will include other software options later? Hard to decide. 0-60 and range is more important.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 9 oy oldin
Not sure what else it might include, but I personally think that range is more important, especially with a 0-60 thats already 4.8s (or 3.5s in the stock performance)

When will the model 3 get an 100Kwh battery?
Lensflare Deviant
Lensflare Deviant 9 oy oldin
They may never put a 100 Kwh battery in the M3. I seem to recall at one time in the past Elon had gone on about batteries being one of the big bottlenecks and he'd rather produce 4 75 kwh cars than 3 100 kwh cars.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 9 oy oldin
Probably not for a couple years I imagine. They’re working on overall better battery tech, and will implement it in the expensive cars first

Great video, as usual! I'm just wondering why Tesla states on the US website: Range up to 172 mi in 15 min... (Model 3 172 mi in 15 min), and on the German website: Range up to 168 mi in 15 Min (Model 3 168 mi in 30 min). So in the US the 3 charges as fast as the Y does, but in Germany it takes double the time?
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 9 oy oldin
Thanks! And I bet that’s just an error. They’re currently rolling out the V3 Superchargers which will do the 15 minute time, so I imagine that they just haven’t updated that info on the Model 3 site yet
