First up, a Model Y was spotted in the wild testing in the snow by Christopher Radoff in the northern Sierra Nevada range. Great to see a Model Y in the Snow.
What can be gleaned from this video is that Tesla is paying a little more attention to colder climates, which has been a little bit of an issue in the past since they’re headquartered in California, which rarely has snow.
Next up, The Model Y Performance officially received its CARB certification which standards for California Air Resources Board. The reason this is significant is that when Tesla received their CARB certification for the Model 3, it was 25 days before deliveries began.
So basically, the Model Y is probably finalized, and ready for production. 25 days away? Possibly, but I’m not getting my hopes up. With Model 3, delivering as soon as possible was vital for Tesla. For the Model Y, Summer 2020 is already ahead of schedule, so I don’t think they will be quite as anxious.
So, if Tesla sitting on a lot of Model Y pre-orders, the car is finalized, they got their CARB certification, and they have the capacity ready to start producing them, I don’t see why they wouldn’t start as soon as possible.
Keep in mind that Tesla always begins by delivering the most expensive model of their cars. So, with the Model Y starting production, they will more than likely begin deliveries of the Performance version.
The other aspect of the CARB certification is likely confirming something that I’ve said in all of my other videos. Tesla has still listed the top range of the Model Y long-range RWD at 300 miles, with the AWD and performance at 280 miles.

Over at Gigafactory 3 Shanghai, Tesla has officially launched their Model Y program to build the Made-In-China Model 3 for the Chinese market. Keep in mind that this Made-In-China version is only for the Chinese market. US Tesla deliveries will still be produced in Fremont, CA.
The CARB certification uses a process called Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule of UDDS to calculate the range of an electric car is absolutely perfect conditions. So before I say how many miles, keep in mind, this is by no means real-world range, and real-world ranges end up being about 70% of this number.
But, the UDDS listed the Model Y at 441.91 miles.
So, if we do some math based on how UDDS typically translates to EPA ranges, the performance should get about 309 miles of range, which is almost the same 310 miles of range as the Model 3 performance. So, still estimating here, and taking into the account the larger size of the Model Y compared with the Model 3’s true range, I’d say the Model 3 performance could be around 300 miles of EPA range when it releases.
For the Long Range RWD, the one I pre-ordered, and the cheapest available until the standard range comes next year, if we do the same calculations, we're probably looking at around 320 miles. That again is only 2 miles less than the Model 3 for a car that’s 10% bigger, and also the model 3 to with 322 miles is AWD, and these estimates aren’t perfect, so I’ll go with 310 miles.
Even so, if we get 310 miles of range, an extra 10 miles is great, especially since the useable range is never quite as high as the EPA range. So if the car releases at 310 miles, hopefully, you can actually get close to 300 miles in real life.
Again, keep in mind that these are estimates, but they’re based on Model 3 which is 75% the same as the Model Y, so they’re hopefully pretty accurate.
What do you think the final ranges of the Model Y will be? And when do you think we’ll see the first deliveries? Leave a comment below, and let me know! And once again, thank you to my 3000 subscribers, and everyone who has watched any of my videos. I really appreciate. Make sure you’re subscribed to stay up to date on everything Tesla and Model Y specifically. I’ll be doing a lot of videos, especially once I get mine delivered, so stay tuned for that, and thanks again for watching, I’ll see you in the next video.

I want to prepare a second charging station and will probably go with sharing on my existing 60A breaker. In Tesla store there is one Wall Connector available and it says compatible with S, X, 3. Do you thunk its safe to assume it will be compatible with Y. I have ordered long range AWD.

They won’t increase the range officially because it wouldn’t be good to state a higher range, but it doesn’t happen under load conditions, people will complain. So you might get 300 instead of 280 in temperate weather, but maybe not always. This is true of all cars.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
They'll increase to whatever EPA is, and the Model 3 increased EPA range since the Model Y was announced. That was a software update, so I fully expect that to come from Tesla in the Model Y.

Model Y deliveries will keep the momentum going - needed now that fed incentives are over for Tesla. If I had Musk's ear, I'd suggest they also immediately make a few minor but desired (if you believe owners) changes to the model 3 as they roll out the Y: power trunk lift; matte finish instead of the piano black cubby doors; possibly a small and inconspicuous readout in the dash in front of the driver (speedo, range left on charge ...); all at no increase in price (of course whatever they're doing differently in the Y may carry over anyway.) They might also now offer the 3 in a "sport trim" package as an option or as part of the Performance model, and gain some of those dollars that are going to aftermarket sellers: black window trim (like the Y), possbily black door handles, side mirrors and skirting. Give a little boost to the 3 to keep it selling as the top range Y comes on the scene.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 9 oy oldin
Yeah, good thoughts. I think it’ll take a bit for them to add those things to the 3. It’s already selling well, and delayed in deliveries 8-11 weeks for Q1. We’ll see how the Y effects that
Jeff Huston
Jeff Huston 9 oy oldin

I feel it’s going to be sooner than later. During the holidays our local Tesla showroom here in Tampa,Fl. Emptied their showroom. It was wired seeing no cars in there. Now they rearranged everything and only have a model 3 and an X. Looks like they’re gearing up to park the Y. Out with the S. They can’t spell S3XY in our showroom. It’s not big enough -I guess..

Said to hear model Y will be built in US... it would be more expensive in terms of cost and quality not really better...
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 9 oy oldin
So interesting how many people say that after seeing that part of the video haha. All Tesla’s have been US built so far, and overall it has been good, but I can see people’s point with China being better. I was just responding to the many people who said the opposite, and assumed that it would be only built in China, and saw that as a bad thing
Chris
Chris 9 oy oldin
Model 3 P is using about a .65 multiplier on it’s CARB rating. If you apply that to 441 that gets you 282 miles for Y performance, right on their projection. So maybe more range, but i wouldn’t set that expectation for people.

Range is not always a problem in snow, depends where you keep your car. If it's in a garage, it's usually not a problem. If you keep it outside all the time in the snow, we'll, you're an idiot.

Ryan Shaw 9 oy oldin

Roger Huston
Roger Huston 9 oy oldin
There is a lot of snow in CA, and it's 3 or 4 HR drive from Tesla HQ. I live in near Lake Tahoe and this year I'm starting to see more Teslas in winter. The problem is not the car, but the drivers. Most who visit don't know how to drive in snow. I've seen some slow Teslas on the road, none with chains yet.
Roger Huston
Roger Huston 9 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw - So Cal usually go to Big Bear or Mammoth, not as many come to Tahoe unless they are staying the week. This weekend is going to be nuts. We just had fresh powder before a holiday weekend. The 3 or 4 hour drive from the Bay Area will take 6 to 10.

I have a model Y on order. However I also had to order a Model 3 unexpectedly (car got totaled) and now delivery is backed up by 8-11 weeks. This changed in 10 days over the course of the new year (last year they had dozens of M3 cars being shipped every day but I couldn't take delivery) so I suspect production has shifted to Model Y.

I hope the range increases. I understood that 0.7 factor is for real world "city" range not EPA range. EPA is a combination of city and highway efficiency with highway efficiency less than city. The CARB is purely city. So 309 real world city range makes the web site 280 mile EPA range sound reasonable. I see no real difference that would indicate a range increase.
Peter Pan
Peter Pan 9 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw They could play with allowable discharge voltage a bit but it looks like no great new soup for the Y's batteries. So you are thinking 3 - 4% increase the 290 range.

This is true, but it’s the standard. Would make no sense for tesla to claim 285 real world battery, and ford to claim 300 epa. People would assume that ford wins
Jamie Harvey
Jamie Harvey 9 oy oldin
Ryan Shaw granted, I do agree that 300 miles is a good estimation. Personally, I do wish Tesla would advertise more conservatively and not advertise the “fresh battery pack” capacity and just buffered out the steep initial degradation that the pack will have. If it could do 300 miles during the EPA test, a 285-ish mike rating would minimize new owners losing their minds when the pack starts its normalization.
Ryan Shaw

Wait for exact measurement Model S < Model Y. Order Model 3 immediately Have you come upon any listing of width for the Model Y that seems to have a very high level of confidence? I am thinking my preorder last week will be at the end of the year,... at best. Model 3 had 455,000 preorders. Cybertruck had 250,000 in a matter of a week. I would assume that the MY has 250,000 - 500,000 preorders out there,.... at 3K - 5K a week that will take awhile.

Thanks Ryan, I am almost ready to order a AWD Y. Question first which no one has brought up in any of the you-tube videos, while using the regenerative braking by releasing the accelerator peddle, how do the people behind you know that your are coming to a stop (especially at night)??? Do the break lights illuminate when the accelerator peddle is released?

Hey Ryan, great video. I really liked your last consolidation of Model Y sitings and this one. I do have one question about how you acquire your b-roll. How did you get the video of Elon dancing on stage? Did you need to ask any special permission to use the video in your video? Asking because I am also interested in getting into making content on youtube, and want to know how people add a video that could be protected by copyright into their b-roll. Thanks, and very excited to see what you make around your own Model Y.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 9 oy oldin
Thanks Maxwell! As long as its “fair use” for UZpost. And it depends on the content creator. Compilations seem to be fine on UZpost, but if you took an entire Tesla keynote and reposted it, with no commentary, then that wouldn’t be “fair use”, and would be a violation because people are going to your video instead of the original, if that makes sense.

Ryan Shaw I was referring to long range dual motor. That answers my question though
Ryan Shaw

Long range rear wheel drive? I’d estimate 310, and long range all wheel drive id estimate 290. We’ll see, and I’m trying to be conservative

Ryan - heard you mentioning that you would be doing videos on Model Y once you get it. why didn't you order the dual motor version then, which you would have got much earlier than the single motor rear view configuration that you ordered?

Santosh Nair 9 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw great points and perspective. Just like your videos. :) Thanks for the reply, Ryan
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 9 oy oldin
I’ll have to think about it. I live in LA and don’t feel that I don’t actually NEED AWD. Also, no matter what, I ordered in October, and orders started in March. So I’m already going to be far back in the pre-orders, and not “beat” other UZpostrs. Plus, the more the merrier. If I was a huge channel, then I’d worry about getting there first, but I still feel that my videos (however months later from release they come) will be valuable. Also, $4000 is a lot to add for a performance boost that isn’t a priority for me. I think 20 miles difference will be worth it too. I could drive to Palm Springs and back on a 300 (310?) mile battery. 280 (290?) would be a stretch, and would require supercharging. Not the worst thing, but I’d prefer to avoid having to stop and charge
Santosh Nair
Santosh Nair 9 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw so 2 points there - 1. There will already be a lot of Model Y videos on youtube slicing and dicing every detail of it by the time you get it and release your videos. 2. The longer range is just 20 miles more (and its just the EPA estimate and not the real life mileage), and as you also mentioned Tesla might update the EPA estimates a little higher for model Y anyway. With that in mind, don't you feel paying the 4k more and getting the dual motor with 20 miles less might have been worth it?
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 9 oy oldin
I want the longer range of the long range, also dual motor is more expensive

I didn’t understand why it was necessary to mention not to worry the car will not be built in China. What would be the big deal if it were?? A million things we use everyday built in China. Tesla is still an American company. It would be an American product built elsewhere. Just like Apple. Are we concerned that our Apple products are built in China? It was a weird statement.

I want the AWD so I can drive from LA to Mammoth to ski - although that's exactly 300 miles from my house to the slopes.
Kenn Stinchfield
Kenn Stinchfield 9 oy oldin
If it is stated at 300 miles and you are driving up to go skiing in cold weather, you can plan on hitting a supercharger along the way because you will not get 300 miles out of the car. I have a Tesla X which I truly enjoy which is a 90D X 2016 with a max range of 259 miles and I can guarantee you that if you think you can get 100% of the estimated range, you will fall short and range anxiety will set in. I’ve driven from Washington State to Texas and back, up and down to and from California and many other places and can confirm that you have to use the power estimator on your dashboard to keep track of your speed and how much you may have to slow down to reach your destination. Am I going to sell my Tesla. Don’t think twice. It is a fabulous car. I would love to have a Y to got with it. I’ve always liked the X and Y axis.

Which is the better value? (Mach e, Model Y, Cybertruck) these 3 starts 40k + and i want you opinion people!
RJ 8U
RJ 8U 9 oy oldin
Cybertruck has the best value per $ in my opinion due battery range and features, unless the MODEL Y have a more advance battery than the model 3. Wait for the 1mil battery along 1mil powertrain from Tesla would be a time to buy or upgrade. To be smart buy Tesla stocks for $500 per share compare to buying a Tesla car now.

Not to be Mr. Self Promoter, but here I compare: Model Y vs. Mach-E: uzpost.info/vision/video/rNNp1bimg3Wvenk.html And Model Y vs Cybertruck: uzpost.info/vision/video/ptZ53bJ-eYCGa2Q.html In my opinion, if either the Model Y or the Cybertruck could work for your needs (Cybertruck isn’t too big and model y isn’t too small), I think Cybertruck wins. However, if you’re like me and don’t need or want a truck, model Y is the winner

Another great video, Ryan, love your presentation style and always interesting content--thank you for explaining UDDS, as I was never aware of that so you made me "more smarter" today! Your subscriber base is just going to grow and grow, so just like Tesla (hopefully), 2020 will be a great year for you. I just read an hour ago online: Eletrek is reporting that Model Y VINs are appearing in the NHTSA database, so it appears that deliveries are not far away now --the sooner the better! Sure hope the range increases--I am moving to where I will have winter again, and although it seems like RWD Teslas do fine in the snow with snow tires, AWD would no doubt be a bit better. If I pay an extra $4K for AWD, would sure love the range to be around 300 vs. 280, although it is not really that big of a difference. Still, every bit of extra range you can get is a good thing! Have never spent $52K on a vehicle (I keep a paper bag handy these days when I start to hyperventilate thinking about paying that much for a car), but at 58, with any luck at all the Model Y AWD may last me the rest of my driving days.
Jmaninaz1
Jmaninaz1 9 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw I tend to keep my cars for a long, long time, so considering the gas cost savings, far, far less in maintenance costs (my 06 Sequoia with 196K miles has run about $2000/yr in repairs (both wear and tear and unexpected) the last 3 years), really good resale value, etc., I have no doubt you come out ahead if you just hang on to the car long enough.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 9 oy oldin
Thank you! I really appreciate the kind words. I saw that from electrek as well. Hopefully soon! And yeah, I’d get AWD if I lived near snow. I would say go for it. And hopefully this car will at least last more than its value!

I think Tesla is just producing some test cars for itsself now. Final tests are still ongoing. In some weeks/months they will announce production rampon. Then there will be a delivery event, when they will handover the first Model Ys to Tesla employees. Since initial production volume will be small, it could take some more weeks until Model Y customers will be contacted to get ready for their Model Y.
Eric Mauriello

How do you buy the black wheels on the pictured Model Ys? There is no option on the tesla website.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 9 oy oldin
No one is sure what those wheels are, and whether or not they’ll be available for it. If they are, it will come when deliveries begin and/or they update the website. The website still says “coming late next year” which was correct in 2021, but is extremely wrong now. So the website needs some love
