1st up, 2 Model y’s were spotted, and photographed in Minnesota by James L., probably doing specifically cold-weather testing. The Tesla Model Y was testing where the temperature was 0 degrees Fahrenheit, or -17 Celsius.
Next up, Ben on twitter @MacBenTosh tweeted “OMG just sat in a Mode Y! (Model Y) Rear seats compassed with buttons on the left side. Rear seats appeared to slide forwards and back!”
Also, the fact that the rear seats slide is a good sign for a car like this. He was in the 5 seater, so depending on how much stuff you’re storing in the back, if you have passengers, you'll have some flexibility for those seats.
When asked about the headroom, Ben said: “maybe 1-2” less than the X”, which is great news for any tall people out there. He’s a Model X owner himself, so he definitely knows the headroom.
The next tweet reply said “6’6” and felt like I was in my X. Great headroom and legroom”.
I’ve seen a lot of comments from tall people on UZpost wondering if they’ll fit in the Model Y since the Model 3 is pretty small as far as cars are concerned, and it looks like Ben, at 6’6” fit just fine, and comfortably, even when compared with his Model X vs Model Y.
So the new info from Ben basically seems like headroom in the Model Y is great, the rear seats do fold, or collapse with the touch of a button, and the rear seats slide back and forth.
He was in a 5 seater, but also this week, new images of the 3rd row, 7 seater Tesla Model Y appeared online.
So these new images surfaced online showing the rear seats and the fact that there isn’t any legroom.
Now my question is, where are the second-row seats positioned for this photo? According to Ben on twitter, the second row can slide back and forth, so if the second row was all the way back for maximum second-row legroom, then yeah, of course, there is no legroom in the third row!
Here’s the Toyota RAV4 vs Model Y 3rd row back seats. Looks pretty spacious, but look at how far up the 2nd row of seats are.
Now the Subaru forester vs. Tesla Model Y 3rd row back seats. Not a ton of space back there, especially in photos, which is all we’ve seen of the Model Y.
Now the very Popular Honda CRV vs the Tesla Model Y 3rd row back seats. In all of these photos the 3rd row is, tiny, but also the 2nd row is scooted up.
Granted, the back of the Model Y slopes more than a Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4, so it probably will be limited headroom back there, but we’ll see.
But who knows, maybe it’ll come out and everything I just laid out is completely wrong, the seats only fit elves, and everybody sticks with the 5 seater. In any case, the final bit of news today comes from Reddit.
Reddit user Quaf4 said that Model Y deliveries are confirmed next month. This Reddit user says that they received a call from a Tesla employee in Canada who was guiding them through their Model Y delivery process. Apparently, the employee said performance variants start delivery next month, and that they could expect their LR AWD in March or April.
The user commented on how it’s surprising that Canadians are getting the cars at the same time as the US, and that is very intriguing indeed.
The user followed up with more details saying that the 7 seater would be available by Q3 (as opposed to the original 2021).
So hopefully, based on all of this new information, the Tesla Model Y performance will be coming in February, the AWD will be in March and April, the RWD will follow that, and then standard range, along with 7 seaters to follow that.
As this video goes live, we are 5 days away from the Tesla Q4 earnings call, and there is where we expect to hear everything about the Model Y. The last we heard about it from Tesla was at their Q3 earnings call, and everyone expects them to announce production and delivery times on January 29th. I’ll make a video as soon as any new details come out and keep you posted, so make sure you’re subscribed.
In the meantime, I can’t wait to get my Model Y AWD, thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in the next video.

Ryan Shaw hey there! So I went with blue with the 19” wheel and fully autonomous feature Of course! :) Not sure about my American cousins but in Canada our choices are Colour, wheel size and the autonomous option. Gerald Desrochers hey Gerald! Congrats on the Model Y. Really excited for you! Which trim did you go for? Currently the model y isn’t eligible for the referral program, but it should be added once production begins (possibly within weeks). I’m not 100% sure, but I’ve heard that you can call tesla to add a referral link once your order is being processed. So once you get an email about delivery being scheduled, you can try adding it then, and hopefully get those 1000 free supercharging miles then!

Hey Ryan: Tesla is not currently showing a leasing option for the Y like they do for the S, X and 3. Have you heard anything about this? Thanks!

Hopefully they will soon once production is underway and the car is actually released. They do it for the Model 3 so they’ll definitely add it for the Y

Riddle me this. What business model charges a $100 fee for the privilege of purchasing their product? On the Tesla website, a model Y now has a non refundable $100 order fee. Not a deposit, but a fee. Yep, a car so special you have to pay a hundred bucks to order one. That Kona is looking better to me by the day.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
It’s to prevent people from ordering with no intent to buy, and it’s applied to the purchase price of the car.

I visited the Fremont Tesla Factory showroom today to enquire about the Model Y and i felt like they were discouraging me from waiting for the Y and get the 3 today instead. They asked me what I am looking for in the Y that is not available in the 3 today. When i talked about the higher ride height, more storage and the 3rd row option, the Tesla guy shot me down me by saying the following - 1. The ride height is exactly the same as 3. He has sat in the model Y front seats and it's the same thing as 3. 2. The Frunk is the same as 3, it is not deeper. Only the back has slightly more storage since its a hatchback. 3. The 3rd row will be pretty cramped. (He asked me to look at the X if i wanted the 3rd row) ... all of which i felt is ridiculous of him to claim and say. The whole purpose of calling Y an SUV is the higher ride height and the increased storage space which comes with it. I don't understand why they would turn away a potential customer enquiring about the Y and giving me misinformation.
Santosh Nair
Santosh Nair 8 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw i even told him about the official tesla videos describing the Y, but he gave me the "dont believe everything on yutube" answer. In thhe end, I felt this could be part of their marketing strategy to push as many 3s and Xs before the Y comes out. But i am not sure if lying about facts is ethical on their part.
Ryan Shaw

And the headroom in the second row? I’m 6”3 and I hit my head in the 3 and S when I sit in the backseat. It really looks like there will be a lot of extra headroom in the backseat since the Y is so much taller there compared to the three. But how much taller🤔

Anyone considering the Ford Mustang Mach-E? I’ve pre-ordered the Long Range AWD Model Y but the Mach-E has very comparable specs and is eligible for the full $7,500 tax rebate. Makes the net price about $5k less. It has advanced cruise control and can parallel park like the Tesla, but no roadmap for self driving on the Ford.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Yeah. For me, the efficiency of how Tesla uses batteries, their autopilot tech, and full self driving tech push me towards that car. Also, they're a fully electric company, and have more experience making electric specific cars. To me, that's worth the extra money, but the Mach-E does look like it should be a very good competitor. Definitely excited to see it come out!

I am going to bet the Y 3rd row is similar to the Lexus RXL. In the RXL, the 2nd row back actually is touching the 3rd row seats. You have to move the 2nd row up to give 3rd row leg room 1in for 1in. Check out the RXL.

SWR
SWR 8 oy oldin
James M. 😂 what! Try nearer 270 miles in cold weather just shy over 300 miles real world. This has model 3 power density and cells. Plus the Y has a few new tricks up its sleeves. The range is limited to fit the segment on purpose so the S and X still have the max range near 370 miles long range version. Unless they use the new packs and cells in the S and X to 500 miles real world then I can see the Y getting the boost to 350 miles real world.

The toyota rav 4, subaru forester, and honda crv do not have a 3rd row. And the picture shown of the model Y shows the seat rails on the floor of the 2nd row. So it looks that 2nd row might have already been moved up a little.

Japan version does.....in Japan CRV, RAV4, and Forester has 3 rows. Japanese are also smaller and skinner than us. They also have tight roads so makes sense that they make compact SUVs with 7 seats for families. Also the Ascent is an 8 seater/7. Meaning it is 2seats/3seats/3seats or 2seats/2seats/3seats.

Ola Leier
Ola Leier 8 oy oldin
Regarding the California car syndrome, they've done these winter tests on the other cars as well. But it isn't just a few days of deep freeze that's the problem, it's the months of slushy, dirty winter as well, on salted roads. Weak wipers, mixed metal corrosion, sticky brakes, climate controls that go haywire, the list goes on. Hopefully they've put all the learned lessons into the Y, because the iterations on the S has indeed picked up a lot of customer complaints from colder climes.
Ola Leier
Ola Leier 8 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw Yeah although there hasn't been that many design changes yet. Wiper nozzles are good, but auto wipe / touch interface is worse. They started offering free mud guards after a Finnish guy raised hell about eroding paint. I think corrosion can be an issue long term, rear wheel area particularly. Other cars have similar flaws too though, and it's good that Tesla does incremental changes instead of model years so improvements come quicker.

@Ryan Shaw Yes this is true. I believe for most average 5'5 - 5'11" people its not that bad. Im about 5'11 160 lbs and i fit in both the back of a VW Tiguan and Mitsubishi Outlander that both house 3rd row seating, and have been ok. It is a bit cramped in leg space for both but Tiguan is a more room then the Outlander. I doubt it can be any worse than these 2.

Our wonderful KIA 2004 Rondo had third-row seats, and they were definitely for children, even though the roof line barely sloped in the back. We used the row once, for grand-kids, and instructions in the car and the owner's manual warned the person closing the back hatch to make sure the door didn't hit the heads of third-row passengers. (We don't normally use the third-row seats in our Sedona either. In the Sedona that row is wide with plenty of leg room for large families, but in the Rondo it is more a convenience row to accommodate temporary passengers.) I really think the Model Y third seat is going to be pretty much useless, even for small children. At a certain size, children have to be in boosters or safety seats; the first requirement would raise the head nearer the roof, the latter shouldn't be located in back. The third row sounds more like a +3 seat in a Porsche. Because the car is an EV, Tesla seems more concerned with airflow than room, thus the low roof-line in back. Perhaps some day they will be able to make a larger, higher SUV.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Yeah, we’ll see about that 3rd row. I think leg room will be okay, but headroom is probably another story. They make the Model X which has a sizable 3rd row. Just expensive

Great comparison of the back seats with the competition. Makes sense.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Thanks! I hope it works well. The main difference is in the sloped back. A CRV doesn’t slope nearly that much, so headroom is still decent

If you get a model y with 7 seats because you have a big family and need it... it’s not the best option might as well go for an ex or a diff car entirely this car is a perfect crossover/small SUV

Glad you went with the AWD for further safety. Also, regarding how far back you may be in que, I suspect that there are less people who pre-ordered before you than many think. The $2500 is prohibitive for some and I feel Tesla did that on purpose. Nice videos and personality!!

I think the term you are looking for is a "powered release." There is no motor, just there is just a powered latch that releases the seats and they collapse due to a combination of springs plus gravity.

Forget about the stupid third row. If you really need a third row on a regular basis, buy a mini van. The Model Y is not a people carrier, folks. Trying to make it into one is just a recipe for disappointment.

@Ryan Shaw Two kids for a short ride. That's my guess what the third row is good for. Nothing more.
mana9013
mana9013 8 oy oldin
Correct the Model Y 3rd row will be more like the Lexus RXL (nonexistent unless 2nd row moves up). In the fully back position, expect the 2nd row to be touching the 3rd row or very close)

Yeah. I agree that if people are trying to cart around 7 people all the time, it’s not the car to buy. But I think the question for most people is, if I need to pick up 6 people real quick, can they fit in this car? And it seems like maybe? But we’re not sure

Hey Ryan, thanks for the videos. Any word on the Model Y’s ground clearance specifications? I haven’t found anything and I live in snow country.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin

Tim Hegg
Tim Hegg 8 oy oldin
Ryan Shaw , that would be a serious bummer. SUV’s and crossovers typically have higher ground clearance than cars, otherwise they should just call it a hatchback.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
From everything we’ve heard, it will have the same ground clearance as model 3. It performs well in snow, but I can imagine if you have to drive in large amounts of snow that aren’t packed down on the road, it could maybe be an issue? We’ll see when it releases

Sorry - I don’t believe Canadian. Also, don’t they start with employee & key user shipments 1st for further feedback & then start mass producing? That goes against best practices. I’m waiting for my ‘all wheel’& excited, but thinking more like June as being more realistic for mine.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
I think earlier than June based on the CARB certification, VIN registration, and the number of release candidates we’ve seen, but I understand your thoughts. Employee deliveries will probably come first, but they may ramp up much quicker than Model 3, since this car is very similar, and they seem to know how to produce it well after learning from Model y. I understand not believing the Canadian delivery. I’m also very skeptical. Congrats on your AWD! Curious to hear when you pre-ordered and how that’ll impact delivery time

I really enjoy your low-key, straightforward presentation style. No annoying music, distracting graphics, or phony drama. There are some other Tesla-oriented channels I watch, and although I enjoy them and the people seem very nice, there is also lot of well-to-do privilege on display that I don't think helps sell the EV concept. I like that you're a regular guy for whom this is a HUGE purchase, which is what I would be if I ever bought a Tesla (and I hope to). If EVs are going to succeed, regular people have to be sold on the concept to break the stereotype of them (and especially Teslas) being toy cars for the rich. I'm actually excited for your upcoming delivery, which is kind of a weird thing to be for a stranger, but there it is. Keep up the good work.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Thanks! Glad to hear you appreciate the simplicity. Some people prefer a lot happening all at once, but I’m glad to hear the opposite. I completely agree that normal people have to be sold on EV’s for them to succeed. I’m a tech guy, so I’m eager to jump, and trying my best to make it work financially, but for the average person, EVs will need to get to a place where overall they’re more cost effective, better, and more convenient in every way for the average person to make the switch. Tesla’s definitely do have the perception of being only for the rich, but luckily Model 3 and soon Model y are changing that for many people. Glad to hear you’re excited for my delivery! I’m very excited as well haha, and will be sure to make lots of great videos of the car when I get it. Thanks for watching, and for the kind feedback!

Thank you Ryan, for the most informative videos on the internet about the Model Y. I ordered mine (the LR AWD) the moment their web site allowed orders on the night of the unveiling, so I am expecting a call any day now. My interest in the Model Y had been waning and I was fairly settled on foregoing the Y in favor of the Cybertruck (the tri-motor, which I have also reserved), but your videos have rekindled my enthusiasm for the Y. I might even be open to up-selling to the performance version, but I would have to have the 18" wheels (that's a topic too big to go into here) and I'm not sure it's worth the price of the upgrade.
Lizard64
Lizard64 8 oy oldin
After a M3P test drive I rented a SR+ for 1 day and I definitely wanted the performance: I didn’t buy it because I prefer the SUV drive position. You both lucky, here in Australia (as the UK) you can’t preorder a Model Y yet maybe because it’s right hand drive...considering also that the first Model 3 landed here in August 19 despite in 2017 in the USA, how do you think I have to wait? 😠
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Gregory Smith ahahah very difficult choice in that regard. Let me know which brain comes out on top!
Gregory Smith
Gregory Smith 8 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw Yes, I test drove the LR AWD Model 3. The acceleration was great - more than what I am used to. I definitely don't need a performance Model Y, but that doesn't mean it doesn't appeal to the part of me that wants the fastest, coolest and most powerful. Still, I expect the more prudent majority of my brain will prevail and I will stick with the sensible LR AWD.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
You’re welcome! And yeah, you should be getting that call soon, but maybe mid february? If they have a lot of performance versions to deliver. Glad to hear your videos have kept you enthusiastic about the Model Y! I think tesla is staying quiet about it because it will be really great, and they need to meet demand. Yeah, to me, performance is totally fine on the LR AWD. Have you driven a LR AWD Model 3? Acceleration is insane (and only a tiny bit slower in Model y vs Model 3)

I ordered a performance model Y with fsd during the unveil. So I’m guessing I’m one of the first in line. I’m also in WA state and we got model 3’s very quickly once they were released. I’m guessing Tesla isn’t calling customers to complete orders until the announcement on the earnings call.

Good summary, Ryan, so thanks for the time and effort in putting this together. Hopefully much clarity will be gained with the Q4 earnings call this week, but I think it is safe to say that the Y is right around the corner.
