Today I’m going to dive into all the questions we still have about the Model Y, and show some you some of the latest sightings we’ve seen that really emphasize both the size and overall beauty of this car. We’re going to talk about the Model Y 2nd row seats, Model Y tow hitch, Model Y size, Model Y ground clearance, where the RWD Pre-orders might be, and more.

Regarding the Model Y 2nd row seats: Tesla’s website the black interior merely says “2nd-row seats that fold flat”, but then when you click into the white interior, it says that it has “three independently folding 2nd-row seats”.
If you look at Tesla’s website showing the Tesla Model Y interior, it’s clear that the black interior includes the same three, independently folding seats. It looks like both the black and white interiors will have those 2nd-row seats, and Tesla’s website just has a weird typo.
Next, let’s talk about a Model Y tow hitch. Will the Model Y have a tow hitch?
We don’t know if it will include a tow hitch, and Tesla has not mentioned the option at all, however, there have been sightings of Model Y’s in the wild that specifically included a tow hitch, so we know that Tesla was testing it. However, the most recent sightings haven’t included them.
But when we look closely at the back, is it just me, or does this Model Y just have the tow hitch covered? If we look closely, there’s clearly a specific panel right where the tow hitch would go.
Come delete is standard on the Model Y.
Now let’s get into Tesla Model Y ground clearance and Model Y size.
Based on photos, people estimate the ground clearance to be about 6 inches in some areas, and as low as 5 inches in other. If you compare photos and videos of the Model Y to the Model 3, it appears to have more ground clearance. The Model Y is only a couple inches shy of the Model X in height but also, the ground clearance appears to be the same.
Now, regarding the size of the Model Y, as I’ve said many times, I think people are going to be shocked by how much bigger it is than the Model 3. In the video you can see The Model Y vs Honda civic, and then a Lexus before it turns in front of a Model X. If we go back and freeze frame, we can see a Model Y next to a Subaru forester or a Tesla Model Y vs. Subaru Forester.
Here’s a photo of it in front of a Model Y vs Lexus SUV, keep in mind that it, of course, looks bigger since it is in front.
We expect the Model Y to be around 6 inches taller than the Model 3
Tesla has discontinued the Model Y Long Range RWD.
This has left many Model Y reservation holders wondering am I actually going to receive this car?
Well, officially on Tesla’s Model Y FAQ it says
“Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive is not scheduled for production at this time”.
I reached out to Tesla via chat and spoke to two different departments, both of which said something to the effect of “We are currently waiting to see what will happen with the RWD as well”.
Then, I got a comment from DM Cooper Johnson who said that Tesla had said “We have been informed that those customers with RWD orders will be notified of next steps over the coming weeks. Information is a bit limited at present, so we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding in the interim”.
I personally think that Tesla will fulfill the pre-orders by essentially making the Standard range version with a larger battery, and then stop production of it, but we will see what happens.
Maybe there will be a few thousand people out there with super-exclusive RWD Model Y’s that go further than everyone else’s! Who knows.
To finish out the video, let’s see more of the Tesla Model Y in the wild.
Glad to see a white Model Y sighting this close up.
Then we have another Model Y prototype video. First, you can see it next to a mini cooper, obviously much larger.
Then you can see it next to a Honda Civic, and then a quick drive-by showcasing the chrome delete handles.
Here’s another photo of the Red Model Y with the new standard 19 inch Gemini wheels. Then another photo from that shows the 20-inch induction wheels.

It seems amazing that a company can design, manufacture and sell a car to thousands of customers without even telling people what size the car actually is. I guess only the maker of the best EV on the planet can get away with BS like that. Keep them guessing and they will come :-)

Hi. I recently ordered a Model Y AWD. Then I came across some various comments on opening and closing a garage door via the Tesla (standard offering on most cars). The comments being that this function is optional on the Y and will require a software cost of $340.00. I stopped in at the Tesla show room in Troy, MI to find out. Those folks know little to nothing about the Model Y as Tesla has provided them with little to no information on the Y. Can this be correct that a software upgrade is require for opening and closing a garage door via the Y - or is it a standard offering like in the gas guzzler?

I didn't expect the Model Y to be this big tbh. First presentation made me think it might just be a "Model 3 Large" of sorts. Glad to see it's actually going to be a decent crossover (although I'm not really a fan of this form factor but that's still better than just a slightly adjusted Model 3).

Tow hitch covers are a typical design in the crossover / luxury SUV segment. If equipped with a tow hitch receiver, it would live beneath this cover. It would make little sense to have 2 different rear bumper fascias for cars that are equipped / not equipped.

I ordered RWD in April last year, and my account shows the car with the new Gemini wheels. If Tesla wasn't going to fulfill the order, why update the wheels?
was7g
was7g 8 oy oldin
@Steve Heller As I say in another comment, I think the most likely option is that Tesla will offer a discount to AWD or a discount on SR+ when it arrives. It's VERY expensive and time consuming to set up a production line, and car companies like to keep them as simple as possible (my last job was at an assembly plant for one of the major manufacturers and I saw this first hand).
Steve Heller
Steve Heller 8 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw another point is, if Tesla was discontinuing the LR, how many orders would upgrade to AWD, and how many would simply wait for the SR? Every downgrade is a loss of $9000. Every upgrade nets$5000 more. How would Tesla justify this?

re: ground clearance Heavy sigh . . . I wanted to believe Tesla when they say on the website description of Model Y that is "capable . . . off road" when describing the AWD model. I love to hike, canoe, kayak and fish in my off time and have been doing so for 30 years now, and that means I need a car that can handle unpaved mountain roads/BLM roads (not Jeep rock crawling trails--have no desire to do that). At a minimum you need 7+ inches of ground clearance and preferably 8 inches or above. 6 inches of ground clearance does not make a vehicle capable off road. I can't spend, with taxes and registration, nearly $60K (I'd want the 315 mile range and AWD) for a vehicle that does not fit my lifestyle -- the CT could easily handle off road and has the ground clearance, but I cannot get with either its looks or 232 inches of length (I currently drive an 06 Sequoia at 204 inches, and I do not want a vehicle 28 inches longer than my current land barge). Wish I could afford a Rivian but that's too expensive. I am so bummed--really don't want to go ICE again but I probably have to turn to a RAV4 Prime or Outback/Forester for at least a few years until they can come up with an EV that will work for me. Great video, as always!

The tow hitch is one thing I must have. I have a plan to buy an after-market hitch and install it before I drive home (I live 800km from the delivery point). Tesla will save me a considerable inconvenience if the hitch is pre installed :) The other thing I must have is a suspension lift kit. The model 3 lift kit raises the car about 45mm and, as the 800km mentioned above is due north of the Canadian border, I will use that clearance regularly in the winter. I am currently driving a 2010 AWD Matrix and it is a little too low for my needs.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
I agree. Would be fantastic to get that tow hitch installed by tesla. And that’ll be interesting to use that lift kit. I’m curious to see how it turns out if you get it!

Who cares if it is a "true crossover"? Why are people so stuck on those definitions?
ShaRk.
ShaRk. 8 oy oldin
Because it's easier for the average customer to put a car in a certain group so everyone knows what to expect (tow hitch in this case). If you think about buying a new car you almost always ask yourself the question which "form factor" you want instead of going straight for "I really want a Mercedes C180 Sedan" for example. At least that's what my personal experience showed me when friends and family thought about buying a new vehicle. Problem is that new form factors were defined over time so obvious differences between them got blurrier and blurrier as the number of form factors reached a kinda unnecessary amount.

Something for your European viewers: Yesterday I talked to a Tesla employee in Germany and I asked him about any information on the Model Y delivery in Germany. He said the plan right now is to wait for Gigafactory 4 in Berlin and not to import Model Y from California or elsewhere. He also said that the capacity of GF 1-3 is too low to satisfy the demand of MY to ship them to Germany (and I would assume that includes the rest of Europe). He also assumed that if the construction gets delayed for a longer period of time (he said this fall), they might change these plans, but for now it seems that Germany (and Europe) will only get Model Y made in Germany.

The tesla.com description of the Model Y reads: "Each second row seat folds flat independently, creating flexible storage for skis, furniture, luggage and more." No distinction between interior colors around that statement.
Ryan Shaw

That’s true, and on the initial page. I feel like that’s a recent addition. Thanks for pointing that out!

Why are all ppl just hunting Y in the wild without approach? Here, if you see fellow human in intresting car, it is very usual to approach person, ask him about the car, he would show it to you. Would this be unusuall for USA?
Roman Roman
Roman Roman 8 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw i understand that. I was talking more about.conversation. there is no way for them to loose their job if they tell you the range, or whatever, until you dont take fotom
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
A couple people have done this, and gotten to see the car close up, but tesla employees driving them are fairly protective and politely ask them to not take photos when they can.

Hi Ryan. I am always interested in your videos. Like you I am a musician and likely to purchase a model Y without the third row of seats in about a years time. Will the Model Y have a rear parcel shelf? I generally bring the PA system & a couple of passengers with all our instruments to gigs; I imagine carrying such weight will reduce the range?
wraggletaggle
wraggletaggle 8 oy oldin
Ryan Shaw yeah I thought I’d never seen a parcel shelf. In my present car I can hide all the gear with the back shelf
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Thanks! I don’t believe it will have a rear shelf like that. Range will be reduced with added weight but shouldn’t be much with the equipment you mentioned

Hi Ryan, really helpful videos that you are making for us. I'm looking forward to seeing your review of your new car when you get it. I'm shopping between the Model Y and the Mustang Mach E but at this time I'm also leaning towards the Tesla. I want to test drive both before making a buying decision.
Steve Heller
Steve Heller 8 oy oldin
@kevin almeida maybe in a few years Ford will have gotten the same efficiency as Tesla. For now, nobody can match Tesla. AWD model Y with 315 mile range blows away every other EV
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Smart to test drive both, and that’s a tough choice! I think Tesla will be the better option since their electric cars have been out for a while, but early reviews of the Mach E are making it out to be a great car as well

I have not ordered a Model Y because I want to see it in action and I can wait some years, but a tow hitch is a must and it should be able to tow 1000+ Kg (Model 3 can tow 910 Kg). Then I can borrow a trailer at the gas station, they usually have a Total weight of 1000 Kg.
Lensflare Deviant
Lensflare Deviant 8 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw I shall hope you're right, and I would expect to a degree (say 75%) that you are. However I remember my friend teaching his daughter to drive and despite her best intentions she managed to find every bump in the road there was. Tesla seems a little prone to bump finding but perhaps lesson learned will ease that. :) If you're getting a model Y.. at any point.. I hate you. Not because you're a bad person but because it turns out I'm a small, petty and shamefully jealous person! :P
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
Haywood Ja'Blome yeah, I completely agree. I’m just saying that this time around, it feels more like they’re making a slightly larger iPhone, after figuring out the first iPhone, as opposed to a brand new product. But there will obviously be things to figure out
Haywood Ja'Blome
Haywood Ja'Blome 8 oy oldin
Ryan Shaw perhaps, but I have a rule of never buying 1st year production. Many agree with me. This is not just true with Tesla, but any manufacturer.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
I agree, but at the same time, this car is 75% based on Model 3...so it will already have all of the improvements of the Model 3 with alterations, so I expect the quality to be higher than say, the first two years of the cybertruck will be.
Haywood Ja'Blome
Haywood Ja'Blome 8 oy oldin
Lensflare Deviant you're absolutely correct. When the first Model 3s came out, paint was poor, gaps were plentiful and hardware was old. Fast forward to 2020 and the " new" Model 3 is much better than just two years before and it's $20,000 cheaper for same car.

I was told by Tesla via chat on February 2nd that I'd be upgraded to from LR RWD to AWD at no cost. Thinking that's too good to be true, I screen capped it, lol. I seriously doubt they'd make a super exclusive model like the LR RWD just for the people who pre-ordered it. Rather, I think we'll be offered a discount to AWD (maybe $2500 or $3k to upgrade?) or maybe a discount on the SR+.

re: tow hitch. my Explorer has a panel like that hiding the hitch receiver... the panel snaps of, and you stick a hitch into the receiver and ready to tow. @Ryan Shaw , well... 19 v 18... you're loosing a half inch of flexible sidewall... I that's the difference between damaging your wheel or not, then it's worth about 1200 USD per occurrence. :)
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 8 oy oldin
How much of a difference is a 19 inch wheel vs 18 for pot holes? I understand 21 inch wheels would have a big issue with this
R
R 8 oy oldin
I know it's really boring, but I would go for smaller wheels with thicker tyres as we have a lot of pot holes here in the uk also. Cheaper to replace when they get damaged or worn.
It's Time

Israel Ramos the larger wheels ride like shit and are prone to being ruined from a simple pot hole.

I am REALLY upset about the rear wheel drive long range. It was going to be a push for me on a teacher’s salary to buy it, but I was going to do it. Now, having to pay $5000 more will probably mean that I won’t be able to pay for it.

@Ryan Shaw Thanks for such a quick reply! Sadly I hadn't ordered it yet. I was waiting to save more money. Here's to hoping that they bring it back or that the regular Tesla's range increases. I need the longer range because I work in an isolated place and have a long commute.

Keep it coming Ryan!! :D :D #1 place for all Tesla Y! Have you started looking at accessories? What are you going to be getting for your MY?
