Today I’m going to dive into all the questions we still have about the Model Y, and show some you some of the latest sightings we’ve seen that really emphasize both the size and overall beauty of this car. We’re going to talk about the Model Y 2nd row seats, Model Y tow hitch, Model Y size, Model Y ground clearance, where the RWD Pre-orders might be, and more.

Regarding the Model Y 2nd row seats: Tesla’s website the black interior merely says “2nd-row seats that fold flat”, but then when you click into the white interior, it says that it has “three independently folding 2nd-row seats”.
If you look at Tesla’s website showing the Tesla Model Y interior, it’s clear that the black interior includes the same three, independently folding seats. It looks like both the black and white interiors will have those 2nd-row seats, and Tesla’s website just has a weird typo.
Next, let’s talk about a Model Y tow hitch. Will the Model Y have a tow hitch?
We don’t know if it will include a tow hitch, and Tesla has not mentioned the option at all, however, there have been sightings of Model Y’s in the wild that specifically included a tow hitch, so we know that Tesla was testing it. However, the most recent sightings haven’t included them.
But when we look closely at the back, is it just me, or does this Model Y just have the tow hitch covered? If we look closely, there’s clearly a specific panel right where the tow hitch would go.
Come delete is standard on the Model Y.
Now let’s get into Tesla Model Y ground clearance and Model Y size.
Based on photos, people estimate the ground clearance to be about 6 inches in some areas, and as low as 5 inches in other. If you compare photos and videos of the Model Y to the Model 3, it appears to have more ground clearance. The Model Y is only a couple inches shy of the Model X in height but also, the ground clearance appears to be the same.
Now, regarding the size of the Model Y, as I’ve said many times, I think people are going to be shocked by how much bigger it is than the Model 3. In the video you can see The Model Y vs Honda civic, and then a Lexus before it turns in front of a Model X. If we go back and freeze frame, we can see a Model Y next to a Subaru forester or a Tesla Model Y vs. Subaru Forester.
Here’s a photo of it in front of a Model Y vs Lexus SUV, keep in mind that it, of course, looks bigger since it is in front.
We expect the Model Y to be around 6 inches taller than the Model 3
Tesla has discontinued the Model Y Long Range RWD.
This has left many Model Y reservation holders wondering am I actually going to receive this car?
Well, officially on Tesla’s Model Y FAQ it says
“Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive is not scheduled for production at this time”.
I reached out to Tesla via chat and spoke to two different departments, both of which said something to the effect of “We are currently waiting to see what will happen with the RWD as well”.
Then, I got a comment from DM Cooper Johnson who said that Tesla had said “We have been informed that those customers with RWD orders will be notified of next steps over the coming weeks. Information is a bit limited at present, so we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding in the interim”.
I personally think that Tesla will fulfill the pre-orders by essentially making the Standard range version with a larger battery, and then stop production of it, but we will see what happens.
Maybe there will be a few thousand people out there with super-exclusive RWD Model Y’s that go further than everyone else’s! Who knows.
To finish out the video, let’s see more of the Tesla Model Y in the wild.
Glad to see a white Model Y sighting this close up.
Then we have another Model Y prototype video. First, you can see it next to a mini cooper, obviously much larger.
Then you can see it next to a Honda Civic, and then a quick drive-by showcasing the chrome delete handles.
Here’s another photo of the Red Model Y with the new standard 19 inch Gemini wheels. Then another photo from that shows the 20-inch induction wheels.
