Alright, we are 2 days (or less depending on when you’re watching this ) away from Tesla’s Q4 earnings call.
What most people are hoping for, and expecting, is that we’ll finally hear everything about the Tesla Model Y. Ideally, we’ll hear about production, we’ll hear when it begins deliveries, what the final design is, what the final range and performance specs are, and much more.
Now, Tesla hasn’t announced anything officially to tell us that Model Y details will come at the Q4 earnings call, but the last official information we heard from them on the Model Y happened at the Q3 earnings call.
At the Q3 earnings call on October 23rd, Elon said
“Regarding Model Y, we're also ahead of schedule on Model Y preparations in Fremont, and we've moved the launch timeline from fall 2020 to summer 2020. There may be some room for improvement there, but we're confident about summer 2020. I've actually recently driven the Model Y release candidate and think it's going to be an amazing product and be very well received. I think it's quite likely to -- just my opinion, but I think it will outsell Model S, Model X and Model 3 combined.”
Then he followed up later saying that they expect volume production of more than 1000 units per week to be achieved by the middle of 2020.
We expect to hear that the Tesla Model Y production has already begun, or is beginning soon, well ahead of that last pushed up summer 2020 release date.
We expect to hear that the first deliveries of the Model Y to employees are imminent, with performance versions to customers to commence before the end of February, or into March.
We then expect to hear a timeline of the next trims to be produced after that, which most likely will be Model Y AWD coming in March of April, and RWD Model Y after that, then further down the line, the standard range, and 7 seater option.
We expect to hear that the Model Y’s ranges are 10-20 miles better than originally announced.
We expect to hear the final dimensions of the Model Y, and just how tall it truly is.
If Model Y is indeed launching, then we can expect to hear the final safety ratings for the Tesla Model Y.
Regarding the design, if they get a chance to go into this much detail on the call, we can expect Tesla to talk about the design improvements and innovations on the Model Y. When responding to an article about Tesla’s design innovations on the 17th, Elon said “I think he will appreciate some design elements of the Model Y body design”.
If they have the time, we may also see them specifically mention the altered design of the release candidate which includes a slightly different hatchback from the original prototype.
Other than that, we’ve seen many different wheels in Model Y prototype sightings, so Tesla might detail those. They could also detail how big people can be in the rear 3rd row seats of the Model Y. They could detail how the spring collapsing 2nd row seats work. They could detail final performance numbers regarding 0-60 times. They could officially detail the ground clearance, and many more details people are anxiously awaiting on Model Y.
It will be really interesting to see what exactly Tesla announces about Model Y on Wednesday. With so many rumors pointing to an early release, if Tesla announces that they’re still planning on a Summer release, this will be a big disappointment to Tesla fans, and likely shareholders at this point. It’s unfortunate, but how big swirling rumors like this work.
At the very least, we’ll get some kind of update on Model Y status, but hopefully some of these rumors are true, and we’ll see deliveries very soon. Either way, I’ll be sure to keep you posted, so make sure you’re subscribed so you can look out for my video on Wednesday evening shortly after the earnings call for all of the latest Model Y information from Tesla. Also, as soon as I get my Long Range AWD Model Y, I’ll be making lots of videos with it.
