The Tesla Model Y is here, I’ve had it for about two months, and driven 2000 miles, and today I’m giving my full review of the car.

The Model Y is Tesla’s follow up to the very successful Model 3, announced in March of 2019.
The base Model of the Model Y is set to come out in 2021, and start around $40,000.
I purchased the Long Range AWD Model Y which now starts at $52,990 and gets 316 miles of range.
I also purchased the 20” black Induction wheels which run an extra $2000, as well as the Model Y Red paint upgrade which runs an extra $2000 as well.
Now since I ordered back in October when the prices were a little lower, the total cost of my Model Y came to $55,500, plus the required Tesla Destination fee of $1,200 for a total of $56,700 before tax.
After tax and Registration fees, my Grand total came to: $60,179.75
Regarding music, the Tesla Model Y sound system is incredible, and one of the best systems I’ve heard in any car. Unfortunately, Model Y Spotify integration is pretty terrible.
No more dealership software upgrades. Tesla sends out regular software updates over the air just like you get on your phone or computer.
Regarding Tesla Model Y Safety. Tesla achieved 5 stars in every category for safety, making it the safest car ever tested by the NHTSA. Tesla expects the Model Y to be no different, and we should hopefully hear those results soon.
The standard package includes emergency braking, collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring, but the big two are traffic-aware cruise control, and autosteer.
I recently did a Model Y road trip of 700 miles round trip to Arizona and used autopilot for the majority of the drive, and it was fantastic.
Now if you don’t want autosteer, you can drive with just traffic aware cruise control to maintain your speed, and react to the cars around you while you steer, and I’ve never had an issue with this.
But, if you really want to go for it, and love self driving, you can get Tesla’s full self driving upgrade for an extra $7000.
Tesla’s goal is to have the Model Y, as it is right now, be capable of becoming a Robotaxi within the next couple of years via software updates.
Model Y Launch is amazing at 4.8 seconds 0-60 in my car.
Now the big question with electric cars is…how annoying is it to do Model Y charging? Well, it’s actually the opposite of annoying, it’s incredibly convenient.
It’s missing a good blind spot detection system in the mirrors.
Those mirrors are pretty short, and don’t show you as much as I’d like to see in my mirrors.
The rear visibility is pretty bad, and results in me thinking cars are closer than they really are, since I can only see the top of them.
The center console comes glossy, which means that it has pretty bad glare at certain times of day, and is the definition of a finger print magnet.
The glovebox can only be opened with the button on screen, which is two taps to get to, and the voice command listed on Tesla’s website does not work.
The air conditioning is a little complex to get to and adjust when driving, even though it is overall cool.
The interior ambient lights are almost non-existant, and provide hardly any light
The app can be buggy, leaving me to walk up to the car, open the handle, and have nothing happen, until I then pull out my phone, open the Tesla app, and it unlocks. It also seems to have more difficulty since both mine and my wife’s phones are connected.
Spotify integration is pretty bad as I mentioned before, leading me to not use the app on screen
Auto brights are a little too aggressive for me, turning on when I don’t really need them just because no cars are around. I turned them off.
There is a bug with the front trunk. The trim is cheap and loose inside, the window didn’t open properly and caused a gash, there are panel gaps, and a few other alignment issues.

You say you are confident that Tesla will fix the terrible fit and finish and sloppy paint jobs even though they have had the same issues and complains from the beginning model years ago. Seems like nothing has or is being done. To me all the tech is useless if the car is built sloppy and has poor reliability.

OMG the issues are incredible - you just kept going and going. Wow. Tesla will solve them over time? I don't think so. They never did on the Model S. It's still a fit and finish nightmare if you took delivery oof a RAVEN today. I guess you just have to weigh the pros and cons.

I drove a Model 3 and I was totally impressed. I would prefer the Model Y for ease of getting into and out of though and also the extra room. The cost is still higher than I want to pay for a new car though and I have a2017 Nissan Rogue that is paid for already. I am planning to wait a few years and pick up a clean low mileage Model Y.

I have a 2018 long range Model 3 that I have had no issues with except for a rock cracking windshield, but no fit and finish issues, no rattles or squeaks. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned. When Tesla gets the kinks and bugs out of the Model Y, I will probably get one.

Ryan, I am due to pick up my Model Y this coming week. I am upgrading from a Model 3 which I have had for 2 years. Can you tell me if you have had any problems with the air conditioning not being cold enough? I live in Las Vegas, and I am really concerned as to whether or not it will actually stay cold. I have had no problems with my Model 3, so I don't want to trade into a problem situation. Thanks so much for your response, or anyone else who might provide their experiences.

First time having Tesla, model Y in early August 2020. Got to go back few times, each time couple days for services. They never come as “mobile service “ stated. Could not even order a loaner in advance. Tesla policy! Not cool to deal with no car for few days even though Uber offered. Never experienced a brand new car with such issues and such bad customer service. Missed owning a Mercedes.

#1- You need a garage or have rights to where you live. If you are a tenant in CA or most of the states you do not have that power whatsoever. #2- The charging stations are packed in the bay area. I know your vehicle was a modest honda fit prior, but once again the brand is marketing to those that not in touch with what most of the country has and well prefers. I will stick to german brand combustion engine vehicles. Or hook up my ipad in my 2000 camry lol.

I must confess utter shock at the statement at 16:44 "... let's you adjust THE NUMBER OF CAR LENGTHS...." !!! When it comes to braking/stopping distance it is totally inappropriate to express it as a FINITE LENGTH, as of course (I suspect YOU know?) it CHANGES with speed. So the correct FINITE UNIT can only be one expressed in units of TIME, e.g. typically 2-3 seconds in good/fair conditions and 3 or more in diffucult driving conditions I hope you "mispoke" (and probably need to edit that?) and that #TESLA in fact has implemented TIME based vehicle separation units which you've misinterpreted? If not then I'm totally flabbergasted that this is not of concern to the #NHTSA . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-second_rule
Retinalism
Retinalism 2 oy oldin
So final update on trailing distance. A #TESLA3 owner confirmed NO UNITS are expressed with regard to this setting, merely an arbitrary number setting from 1-7. Additionally, for those who understand this important concept, the system does increase the separation dynamically according to speed, ensuring increased braking distance as speed increases. Still surprised the #TESLA support guy couldn’t clarify that.
Retinalism
Retinalism 2 oy oldin
So I called the #TESLA helpline and they CONFIRM the setting is done in CARLENGTHS!!! Just beggars belief IMHO, and I'm baffled that #NHTSA let that through without reflection or comment. Calling @ElonMusk

Where am I going to put my wet dogs in this or any other Tesla vehicle? And I’m a huge Tesla fan. It seems they just keep dancing away from the needs of regular people in towns like me. And I’d trade in my one ton Duramax Dually if Elon could show me another way to pull a gooseneck three horse trailer. Nothing fits my lifestyle.

I like the iPad thing in the middle but watching you use it while driving shows a lot of eyes off the road issues. It would be better with steering wheel buttons that are linked to the screen and would be better with a screen right in front, or a heads up display like a lot of cars have now. And why have gears on a steering column stick? That makes no sense. If anything why not paddles? Did they put the window washer and indicator on the same stalk....why? As far as I can tell, the most useful thing the self-driving can do is keep your car straight while you are messing around with the iPad in the middle of the dash. I love Tesla for being Tesla and bringing automobiles into the 21at century but honestly, as other manufacturers bring out more electric cars I can see myself buying something else. I see Tesla like Apple and there will be someone else who will become Teslas Samsung. At that time I will decide if I prefer to buy something for more money that has less add ons but more stability or will I buy the cheaper car that may be more open source as far as upgrades and add ons. But then I want to buy a classic car next so this is all a moot point lol.

Nice review sir & thank you for making this. I love the idea of a legit electric car & I was debating but I’m definitely not getting Tesla at least not like this. Didn’t realize you have to have it connected to a dumbphone..how reliant it is on a touchscreen or the bad voice command stuff. This seems like a crapple phone combined with a really great electric car idea. Keep it old school inside with controls for the most part without all the touchscreen blabla besides a gps screen if anything, waaay too much looking down at the screen

Here's my question about the fit and finish issues. While it's good that Tesla fixes the issues, what is the build quality going to look like when it's off warranty? Cars at this cost should be around for a couple hundred thousand miles. I'm not sure Tesla's are built to last.
Karl SMA

@Zach Marshall the Model S and X have had a history of burning through motors. If they're having trouble aligning seats and panels, what kind of mechanical issues will it have? I just read Car and Driver's 20k mile review of the Telluride. In those miles, they had zero trips to the service center. Tesla is the future. The present, however, is filled with poorly built cars.
Zach Marshall
Zach Marshall 3 oy oldin
Teslas are built to last even tho they have issues. Due to their fewer moving parts, they will last longer. From what I've heard the battery lasts up to 500,000 miles and the body a million. Elon has a million-mile battery that he's working on also so that'll be exciting.

So basically the only good thing is it’s electric and has the best battery by a street mile. Everything else is a major problem and complete piss take for a car of that price tag. Fk me if you and everyone else is not worried about putting your life in the hands of software....then you should be. Tech for the sake of tech is not a good thing it’s a bad thing. Trusted tech that’s proven is way better like a key and button. Just saying yes it’s less cool but it works. So when you got no phone battery, or the software fk up (which it will at some point) what do you do break the window to get in and pay what an astronomical fee to get it put back if you even can! Good luck. Look at every product today software driven from games to phones, how many work day one? None. Tesla can even update you remotely, you think that’s great. But judging by the programmers and tech industry that’s fkin worrying. What happens when they send and update that’s wrong and fkin crashes the car....maybe kills someone! Give me a basic car with Tesla battery tech for 20k and you can keep you shitty tech and self drive bollax. If you dont want to drive get a taxi! I have a car and bike because I like to drive, not be driven. Musk on one hand says it’s a driving experience. Then takes the fkin experience away! Not for me fella until he comes back down to earth where the rest of us live. Iam not just knocking Tesla the whole industry is taking the piss out us on price.
