Tesla just announced their Q1 2020 Earnings. It turned out to be great in spite of Elon Musk's tweet storm this morning, and they were profitable.
Elon talked quite a bit of Tesla's Full Self Driving, and how the stop sign recognition and confirmation helps feed their neural network. Elon compared this process of gathering data to how Google works, and emphasized how far ahead they are.
Soon Elon expects that Tesla's will be able to go through these intersections on its own, and make turns. On top of this he predicted that by the end of 2020, your Tesla will be able to drive you to work and back all on its own.
Tesla mentioned full self driving subscriptions, and said that they plan to bring it by the end of the year. They still feel that the best option is to buy it at purchase and roll it in with your financing, but they will be adding a subscription option towards the end of the year for customers who didn't buy it at time of purchase (like me), and for those leasing.
There was very interesting news about the Tesla Model S. According to Elon, the Model S already has a 400 mile range, and has had it for the last few months, but the EPA tested the range wrong. Elon said they were testing over night with a door ajar, and the car was constantly warning them that the door was open which ultimately resulted in a range loss of about 2% bringing it to the 391 mile range it has now. According to Elon, once EPA testing opens back up, they will re-submit the Model S, and achieve the 400 mile range, which it already has.
Regarding Tesla Battery Day, Elon talked about how excited he was for it, and mentioned it will be the most important day in Tesla's history. He said that it will take place either in California or Texas...which likely leaked the location of their next Gigafactory.
There have been rumors that Tesla's next Gigafactory would be in Texas, and when asked Elon said they would announce the location of their next Gigafactory, located in the US, within the next 1-3 months. It seems very likely that it will be Texas.
Tesla's stock has been up in after hours trading related to their profit, and overall it was a positive quarter for Tesla. I'm interested to see how the Tesla revenue, or Tesla profit is affected in Q2 of 2020.
Some more highlights were that the Tesla Model Y is already profitable, they launched the Model Y early, the Model S reached that 391 mile range with nothing but software, and their solar installs are up.
Tesla produced 102,672 cars and delivered 88,496 cars. As usual, the majority of these are the Model 3 and Model Y.

Pat Rick you’re probably right, but to me it seems a bit odd to hold “the most important day in Tesla’s history” in Texas with no plans of any future for tesla there and just because he spends time there
Pat Rick
Pat Rick 5 oy oldin
Sorry to bust your bubble on the GigaTexas guess. When he said battery day would be in Texas if not in California was due to Elon spending most of his time in Boca Chica with getting Starship flying. Texas is still possible but I doubt Elon does that without direct sales laws changing.

If they rollout the subscription FSD, will the $7000 (or whatever it gets raised to) option still be available at the time of purchase, or will all new owners be forced into the subscription model? Obviously answers will be speculative, but what do you think?

What kind of range do you get with the Stereo and AC on full blast and aggressive driving?
Alex NutCasio
Alex NutCasio 5 oy oldin
Yes, 643 kilometers in both US and Germany. What's the Taycan at? 327 kilometers? Yeah, thought so.
Alex NutCasio
Alex NutCasio 5 oy oldin
Dont Care the aggressive driving would affect the range the worst. AC, maybe 10% ( 40 miles on a 400 range sic). Heat a little more. Stereo and lights, next to nothing as lights are led.
Ducaudi
Ducaudi 5 oy oldin
Tesla needs to quit bullshittin’ and make the mileage range that the roadster gets (620 ish miles). This dancing around milking out and slowly increasing the miles is being damn greedy. Good for him on that but pisses me off. Still looking to get one next year though.
Alex NutCasio
Alex NutCasio 5 oy oldin
Ducaudi as a multi-Tesla owner, I can tell you that any BEV is going to get less mileage than EPA rating or even manufacturer rating if you heavy on the accelerator or running the AC or heat. At a steady 70-75 mph on highway with no heat in, you're probably going go get EPA rating. Add heat ( resistive or otherwise in Model Y) , elevation changes ,passenger load and you're likely to get 20% less than rated. This affects ALL BEVs however, not just Audi, Porsche, Tesla, Chevy , Mini, VW etc. We're at 400 miles rated now with the Model S Long Range Plus . Realistically, that car probably does 320-350 running heat or AC , but that's often more than enough more most on a daily or weekly drive. One problem is, the acceleration is so intoxicating that it's hard not to step on it at a light. Even the long range Model S is in the low 4s 0-60 which is quicker than 99% of the cars on the street.
Ducaudi
Ducaudi 5 oy oldin
Alex NutCasio E tron mileage is way too low. I’m debating on waiting even longer for more mileage range out of the model y. That’s the one that would suit me best. I just dislike that you only get around 280 miles out of the performance vehicle.
Alex NutCasio
Alex NutCasio 5 oy oldin
Ducaudi you could get a Taycan or Etron with 203 miles range. Would that suit you??

Subscriptions will definitely be more than a hundred. Autopilot costs 11,000 for people that already own a Tesla so even if subscriptions were merely $100 it would take over 9 years for that initial $11,000 to be worth it. I wouldn’t even be surprised if they make it $250 considering they’ll want to give people the incentive to buy it at all at once

My first car was a little Nissan pick up that had a 10 gallon gas tank and got 30 mpg the way I drove. That is only 300 miles. It was always enough. I agree that 200 isn't enough, but 400 seems pretty pragmatic. I could understand 500 mile range so you could have a 400 mile working range in that comfortable 10% to 90% sweat spot.

It is interesting to note the EPA deny leaving the door open, so maybe we should wait for another test before jumping to conclusions. Also a 2% loss from a 100kwh battery by leaving leaving a door open overnight? Whichever way you look at it that's not great.

@Ryan Shaw the test was not wrong, it didn't make it. Musk can yell the top of his lungs, but the model S didn't make the 400 miles mark. Back to the draving board, or they deliver one that have more kWh avalible just to make it. Just to get that number.

fucking propaganda, nothing more. Do they have new kind of battery? Tesla S is a special car. Usual car like Nissan Leaf in cold climath can go 70 Km (45 miles) per charge and it is normal for lithium battery. 400 miles is the special conditions and special car. Ussain Bolt can run 100 m per 9,58 second but normal 50 year man in 22 seconds and he is usual buyer not Bolt.

Why does everyone seem to think the FSD subscription (with not commitment) rate would be $100 or less a month? Let’s look at some facts here. A) in the earnings call he stated the best option would be purchase with car. B) Current cost is $7,000 for purchase or $99 a month lease option. We know in June that is expected to be $8,000 and likely $130 for a lease. C) Universally no contract Subscription cost more than a Subscription contract. Based on these facts a no contract subscription would likely be $175. With possible a weekly of $50. I also suspect they might do a yearly contract option for about 150 a month.
gstone321

Yeah I was thinking along this also. Generally its cheaper and you save money purchasing items in full outright. I'm guessing between between $150-$200 per month.

Giga Texas makes the most sense as Texas is the second largest state in the U.S. (population) and the largest truck market in the U.S., hands down. This will give Tesla factories in the 3 largest states in the U.S.: CA, NY, TX, along with the two largest car markets outside of the U.S.: China, EU. Musk is a pretty smart dude, he knows how to plan for the most profitable long haul.

I have a feeling that FSD subscriptions won't be cheap. Like, I'm just a random person on the internet speculating - but simple napkin math makes recouping 7k over 6 years is over 100 per month. Due to upfront costs and cancelation risks, Tesla will likely want more than that. A lot more. They're going to want to make their money back in 2-3 years. That'll be $200-300 per month. Will someone that wasn't willing to pay $7000 upfront want to pay $200+ per month?

From what I gathered in the call, it seems like the 7 seater Model Y is going to be less profitable and more expensive to produce than the 5 seater, do you think that with the way Elon worded the cost of production for the 5 seater, the 7 seater might have a different rear design? I found this information before the technical difficulties when Elon was talking about Model Y costs related to the similarity to the Model 3
Stephen Deverell
Stephen Deverell 5 oy oldin
Right. I can’t see how they can squeeze in another useable row of seats without some modification. My concern with the 5 seater Y remains that for the sake of aerodynamics they have pinched in the rear of the cabin, which in effect means the second seat row only has 2 1/2 seats, the middle seat being just 12” wide. Still not sure how that got signed off.
