The Performance Model Y is incredible, and we take it for a spin! With it's dual motos and insane 3.5 seconds 0-60, this car is incredibly fun to drive.

In today's review of the Tesla Model Y Performance, I drive the Model Y through windy streets, and more.
Inside the Model Y, you'll notice great forward visibility and panoramic visibility thanks to the Model Y glass roof. The Model Y Rear Visibility isn't great since the rear hatchback is at such a steep angle and really doesn't leave much room to see through the back mirror.
The Model Y sits higher than the Model 3 and it's very obvious when you drive it. It drives more like an SUV than a sedan but is still much smaller than a full-sized SUV.
The Model Y does one-pedal driving and it's a very easy, and fun feature to have in an electric car. The handling in the Model Y is also great, and adds a lot of confidence when driving on windy roads like I do.
Let's launch the Model Y. The Model Y launch and Model Y 0-60 are incredible. This model does a 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and that launch with the instant torque is absolutely amazing, and incredibly quiet as well.
In the rear of the Model Y, you'll notice the somewhat muffled sounding bumps. It's better than the bumps, but it has an interesting sound to it.
As you watch, keep in mind that I'm not the ultimate "car person". I don't typically drive expensive cars, and also, I'm a Tesla fan, so keep that bias in mind with this video.
The Model Y turning radius feels great in this car and performs well with quick U-Turns, and the pedals are really easy to control. Even in Model Y sport mode, you will have no problem controlling the pedal and not launching your passengers when unexpected.
The Model Y is designed for 5 passengers, and the thought of Tesla adding 2 more seats in the back seems pretty crazy. Those will be some small seats.
The sound level of the Model Y noise when driving is around 62dB when I'm driving 40mph or so. The speedometer is on the Model Y screen, so you look to the right as opposed to inside the steering wheel.
The Model Y Maps are essentially a large Google Maps, and the screen has the ability to pull up the rear camera at any time necessary.
Regarding the Model Y stereo, the sound quality is top-notch. Great highs, great lows, and dynamic range. Take my word for it as a musician, it's GREAT!
The Model Y also visualizes obstacles on screen for the Model Y Autopilot system, and it beeps at you if you get too close. On top of this the Model Y will slam on the breaks or steer away from an obstacle if necessary.
Overall, the Model Y is super fun to drive, and I didn't even get to drive on the freeway. In the future I'll be able to make more videos in every situation, so make sure you're subscribed to this channel to stay up to date on all of my videos about the Model Y, Tesla, Tech, and More.

Very good video. Very informative yet not dry. You seem to somehow able to combine very detailed information with a bit of a personal touch to it. Very cool. Also I see you are using GoPro 360. Is the sound in the video being captured with that camera ?

Thanks for watching, and for the kind words! The audio is captured on a lapel mic going into the camera in the rear. The GoPro audio usually isn’t too useable unfortunately

Have been waiting for the MY for a long time. But just noticed an issue that is critical for me: lack of towing capability. Isn't that what the "U" in SUV implies: Utility? While I have no need to tow a trailer, I do need a hitch-type receiver that will support a hitch-mounted bike rack. This is not a maybe -- it is a must if I am to move my bikes using my vehicle. Contacted Tesla and their online chat confirmed: no towing capability and, worse yet, no way to mount a hitch on the vehicle. As much as I want a MY, I will look to a competitive vehicle that allows me to mount a bike rack on a receiver -- unless Tesla fixes this omission soon. Otherwise, I'm impressed with the car and with your review!

I don’t care for 21” wheels. If you live in area that will require you to use snow tires in the Winter. You will have to go down a size and 20” or even 19”. They are very expensive and not good. For winter you need tires no bigger than 18” to drive through snow and ice. I’ve had cars with 21” and it’s great if you live in CA, or FLA all ok but for the vast majority of us I wouldn’t do it again.

I just got a call from Tesla saying I am on the "short list" for delivery of a non-performance 2-motor AWD Model Y with 19" wheels. Should I be exited or do they call everybody just to keep us happy?

They let you launch it but not take it on the highway for the noise tests? Highway is where noise really matters, because it's going to be way more significant and you'll spend a lot more time there. I would love to hear this if you test it again. It's the biggest drawback to my Model 3, by far.

Hi Ryan, thank you for this and the other Model Y introduction videos. Thanks Ryan. Like you, I am waiting for my white AWD with b/w interior. Two items you mentioned that would be nice to have a little more detail is the forward facing windshield view and the noise compared to the 3. Specifically, does the top of the windshield on the Y restrict visibility any differently than the 3 and is the noise the same or did they make the Y quieter (wind and tire noise).
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
I believe the Y is a little quieter but it’s hard to compare for sure at this point. The visibility is close but I think above you lose a little because of that beam and the fact that you’re sitting higher
SWR
SWR 7 oy oldin
Important to still point out the build quality issues like panels not matching up etc and paint and weld points. Its the Only way Tesla will improve on quality. Anyone pointing out such is really fighting for the next guy that will buy one. So people do us a favour and keep chasing Tesla on the defects and poor quality finish.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
That's a great way to look at it. I have a bunch of detailed close ups on the build quality that I'm hoping to bring in a video soon

Hey Ryan, is the visual any different from the model 3? It seems that the windshield of the model Y is smaller then model 3 because of the raised front hood. Do you notice a significant difference because of the increase in height? One of the best attributes of the model 3 is its great visual. Really enjoy your channel. Thanks for all the great videos!
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
The visual out the front is sill great. The only difference I noticed is that the top beam takes out maybe a little more visibility than it does on the Model 3
Ma Lin

My only worry is the car could get hot during summer with all glass roof. I will get a roof cover as well as windshield cover when I get my Y.
Ma Lin
Ma Lin 7 oy oldin
Ryan Shaw I should also ad that most electronic equipment inside the car will fail prematurely if they get exposed to high temperature (+140 deg) frequently. You definitely don’t want yo leave your phone or charging in high temperature.
Ma Lin
Ma Lin 7 oy oldin
Ryan Shaw If you search around, you will see plenty of complaints. The car has overheat protection setting that will turn on AC automatically. It has been reported that the car inside can reach 160 deg under sun on a hot day. So you do want to put a sun shield to save your AC and battery.

Roman Roman
Roman Roman 7 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw but you cant have navigation on, and you have to look down. There is the reason why rearmirror is best placed high in front of head. It should be displayed at all times in place of rearview mirror. It should be LED displaying rear camera picture. Not reflective glass trying to cut throu rear passengers head.

I hear the coil whine on those launches just like I do with my Model 3. Didn't realize it was that obvious even from a recording. Small price to pay though for the pure performance. Also, you should've tested the autopilot anyway while paying attention to the road. It ha does surface street lanes and other vehicle traffic just fine, you will just have to watch stop signs and lights yourself (although the car will still stop at a light if there's at least one other vehicle stopped in front of you).

That was great. After seeing all the _...and here's the frunk..._ Model Y interior videos everybody has done in the last week, I've been wondering if anyone ever actually drives this car. I agree about the tiny rear window. This is a complaint I have about a lot of newer cars, not just Teslas, the sloped rear design in so many cars gives you just a little bitty window in back. It makes backing out of a driveway or parking space, or maneuvering in a tight space, quite daunting. A rear camera helps, but I always want to be looking in the direction I'm driving, don't want to be shifting forward and back from screen to window to screen, it's disorienting. I have my fingers crossed you'll get yours soon. Keep up the good work.

Tyler Boye - Me? I’m really bummed about the lack of a rear parcel/cargo cover! A really stupid, “cheap” omission on the part of Tesla. As well as being an obvious security risk with respect to potential thieves being able to see items in the rear, there is also the issue of making the vehicle noisier - such a large cargo volume with no cover has the potential to cause a drumming/reverberation effect, resulting in higher internal cabin noise. It really makes the vehicle look “unfinished”. 99% of all the SUV’s / hatchbacks on the road have one, including the Model S - why not the Y?? To me it’s as essential as a sun visor or glovebox in a vehicle - we really wouldn’t put up with those being omitted!!

Biggest problem with this car, it won’t convert non Tesla fanboys and fangirls, too many compromises, rear view is really poor, it looks like it has no rear wiper, again in the real world who cares about launch, it would appear that they made the mistake of making the model 3, this is what the model 3 should have been, and then they could have made the Y an actual SUV, Model 3 sales will crash, Tesla not learning from the mistakes they made with the Model X, they are ok at the moment, but when he big guns get there act together hey will struggle, they maybe safe making compromised cars, as will the other manufacturers ever get there act together, my main annoyance is that Tesla could be so much better with just a little more thought about it’s range of cars

Love your videos Ryan!! I got my AWD LR Model Y on Sunday!! I’M LOVING IT!!! The salesman said it was the first Model Y going to Memphis, TN. Appreciate all your passion for the Model Y and Tesla. Very informative. Very entertaining! Keep up the good work!!😊

Good one Ryan :) Can you please measure the ground clearance of that lowered suspension with 21’’ Überturbine Wheels. And finally... you broke the promise and launched the Car for the 4th time at the end of video. He He
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
Just Spectator yeah it’s low. But the listed ground clearance for the 19 inch wheels is 6.6”. Not sure about your question! It seems that tesla only lets you do the wheels on their specific trims.
Just Spectator
Just Spectator 7 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw At 5 inches can we still call it a SUV 🤔 It is close to Model 3 now. Is it possible to get that 20’’ Induction Wheels from Long Range as trade-in? I think a regular Performance with 20’’ will give you the same 3.5s and more than 300 Miles. What do you say?
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
Thanks! The ground clearance is at 5 inches on that lowered suspension. Assuming I measured it correctly. And yeah haha I had to break the promise!

I love the launch in the Tesla as well but please be safe doing it. It appears you are on roads where cars can pull out of driveways and there are pedestrians. O to 60 on a 30 to 35 mph neighborhood road is not safe. Thank you
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
unclepeter69 thanks for the support! Hopefully we both get our soon. I’m in a similar situation. I ordered FSD, and my fiancé has fibromyalgia periodically, not constant, but on some days driving is really tough. I’m also hoping it can help her out

unclepeter69 7 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw thanks I appreciate a guy that can take constructive comments well. By the way keep up the great work. I'm also waiting on the Y same as yours, however I can't recall if you got FSD, I did due to wife having neuropathy and hoping this will be able to get her behind the seat on day.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
Yeah, overall I was very safe and only on roads that are safe for that, but I value that point and will be sure to be safer in the future. Thanks for watching!

Hi Ryan. Question. If i recall correctly when driving the model X, the feature that alerts you to being too close to something- in the X it would show a vehicle as a car. If there was a person near you, it would show up as a person icon (I think). Do you recall if that was the case with the Y? Can’t wait to get my performance!
Ryan Shaw

I am not agree with google map is better than Apple map, instead, Apple map information is more accurate and database, Google map has better route only.

No they are perfect. Didn't you hear? They over delivered on everything. There's literally nothing at all wrong in the slightest with any Tesla. Nothing. Oh and they all have options for HUDs, mood lighting, cargo covers, and they have the tow hitch ready already. It's all perfect. I'm talking about other people's videos more than this one.

I take from your comments that you don't currently own a Tesla? If that is the case, taking us along for your new to Tesla experiences are fun to watch and I'm happy for you. We've had our Model 3 for almost 22 months and I still follow almost everything Tesla as there's nothing like it and it truly is a step into the future that just keeps getting better. Looking forward to your future videos.
