Thanks to @SeasonedTech on Twitter, we have a confirmed measurement of the Ground Clearance on the Model Y! It looks like it will be 7" which is a great improvement on the Model 3.

Tesla's Model Y is starting deliveries in March, and customers have been receiving emails to schedule their deliveries. Then customers who hadn't received emails yet noticed that their account now says "Prepare for Delivery". Unfortunatley, this isn't a sign of anything regarding delivery. It's getting close, but it seems that every single Model Y order received this message.
RWD orders also received this message which could be a good sign that Tesla with make the RWD Model Y, but not a 100% confirmation.
Then we got the ground clearance measured with a water bottle that confirmed a 7" Model Y ground clearance.
The Model Y Delivery Survey shows us that the Model Y AWD with 19 inch wheels, Model Y AWD with 20 inch wheels and Performance Model Y have all gotten notifications about delivery. There seems to be no true pattern that we can trace here other than a delay on the white interior, 7 seater, and RWD.
Can't wait to get my Model Y, so make sure you're subscribed to see when I get mine!

Which hatchback design will they have? If you look at the static red one and the video of the blue you can see that the line for the blue hatchback goes straight down and on the red model it curves to the outside. I think there may be more room if it curves to the outside.

what do you think about getting it right away versus waiting 3-6 months to see if they work any bugs out of it and update the production model?
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
I think that always could be a good idea. The only reason I don’t think it applies as much as, say the Model 3, is because tesla has said that the the Model Y and Model 3 share 75% of the same parts. The Model 3 has been going strong for almost 3 years now, and Tesla seems to have figured out most of those bugs. Since this car is largely the same, just a bit bigger with a hatchback, I expect that they will take everything they learned with Model 3 and apply it. I’m expecting much better initial production on this car, but people will always want to wait for the updates and bug fixes.

My price did not change. I did receive the upgrade modifications wheels, but my cost for AWD is is still 60,500. I also have received the schedule for delivery at end of March date, and have started the loan application portion. Looks like about 1700 dollars in tax/doc fees were added to the overall cost, and then the 2500 dollar pre-order was applied. In total my loan will be a little over 59k. For me to build and order the same vehicle today would be 62,990. Hope that helps!

That 7" estimation is very interesting because the Model X ground clearance is only 5.4 inches, and the model 3 is 5.5 inches. 7" is the same as my Pathfinder so I'd be ecstatic to have that same clearance on my Y. Unfortunately I have to wait til 2021 for the 7 seater.

I got a call last week asking me to schedule a test drive of the Model 3 since they said the Y would be very similar, and I assume they are hoping to expedite deliveries as the Y's become available. They said they didn't expect to have the Y in the showrooms anytime soon (maybe months?). I went in and test drove a 3 yesterday, sales staff seemed unaware of the program to get Y order holders in for test drives and had no information about the Y.

When I ordered my Model 3 last year I talked someone on the phone at Tesla about something else but mentioned delivery times(this was the end of the year tax credit push), he told me that the first people to get theirs are the ones who have EVERYTHING completed on the "prepare for delivery" list. He said to make sure I had my insurance card uploaded and all my payment info in and I would be one of the first. They prepare all the paper work before you go. Without a walk through it only takes about 10 minutes to sign some stuff. So if you aren't going to slow them down you should be first in line when your model is ready. Good luck and I look forward to seeing videos of your Model Y.

@Gary VanderMolen You will have 2 active policies. Tesla will not let you leave without their VIN on a policy. That's true in my state, yours could be different.
Random Name
Random Name 7 oy oldin
@Gary VanderMolen Have them both insured. Upload an active policy (ie your current insurance card). When you get the VIN for your Tesla and have a delivery date then start your new policy for the Tesla and upload that card. Most state require you to turn in or transfer your tags prior to cancelling your current policy anyway.
Gary VanderMolen

How does that work with having the Tesla car named on the insurance card when I intend to trade in my current car simultaneously? I can switch which vehicle is covered but I can't very well drive an uninsured car to the Tesla pickup location.

I guess what Tesla doing is to imply you upgrade your order to AWD even performance, meaning they try hard to make more profit per car or model Y lacks high-profit orders. Anyway this email means nothing. Another guess Tesla moving up to send emails of deliver model Y before Battery Day may means model Y is not applying new battery tech( although on tesla website model Y charging faster than model 3), and the new battery technology they are unveiling might be BIG.

The bottom of the sill does not necessarily translate into ground clearance. Ground clearance is measured from the lowest point beneath the car... so that might be the bottom of the sill, but there might be something else under there that protrudes below the sill.

The ground clearance is most likely only due to larger wheels and higher profile tires. Skateboard and suspension probably very close or identical to Model 3. They do share 75% of parts. An inch and a half is not a lot.

I ordered mine Feb 1st. Specs: AWD, White, 19” Geminis w/ Black Interior. No self driving capability. Maybe I’ll regret that in the future but for now, I just don’t think it’s there yet. Anyone know the increasing cost of adding it post-production? So last night, I didn’t receive an email so I logged into my account. I had the option to change my design (and still do at time of posting this). My only problem with the Y is it seems really overpriced to me. Living in the snowy mountains I would want AWD, and what's the point of buying Tesla if you don't buy the $7k autonomy. It's a $60,000+ car at that point. :( By comparison you could buy the Cybertruck mid-range for LESS, or a Rivian SUV for roughly the same after the $7500 tax credit which is WAY MORE vehicle than the Y. I can't get past the price....

$57k electric car with 315 miles range is not bad. all other electric car either too small or looks ugly to me.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
The included Autopilot does more than you think. It does lane keeping and adaptive cruise control. There is definitely a point to buying without the $7k upgrade. I don’t think the Model is overpriced for where it’s at. I do think electric vehicles will eventually come down and be more comparable to normal cars, but currently for what it includes, the price makes sense. Cybertruck is basically comparable on price. Sure, “more car”, but not much better feature wise

imsatasia yes - you keep the pre-order price. My Y is scheduled for delivery between March 15th and 21st at the same 60,500 price I was pre-ordered at. After tax/doc fees the cost went up to 61k and change and the $2500 pre-order dropped it to a remaining cost of 59k and change which I have already started the Tesla financing with. I am no longer receiving emails from Tesla, I am receiving text messages from an employee “walking” me through the process. efficiency ...ice cars are more efficient with fwd because the heavy engine is lays over the front wheels/drivetrain. e-cars (without such an engine) specially with strong motors like sports cars which btw often are rwd have the weight shift on the rear wheels specially while accelerate, which makes rwd more efficient for e-cars. but in general you're right, fwd is more save to drive for not so experienced drivers, or in situations, where your care brakes out. additionally fwd helps to design cars to understeer in extrem situations. and most regular cars are designed like this since is easier to handle for drivers.

@Steve Martin Yeah Tesla really broke the mold with the Y. I had planned on paying off my i3 this month (pending) and getting the M-Y mid to late this year at the earliest. Plenty of time to save up for a huge down payment. I can swing bigger payments with a smaller down, and get it sooner. If I already had a Model 3 or something I would be in no hurry. But I much prefer hatchbacks and little crossovers. My last ICE car was a Jeep Renegade 5 speed. Great little nugget. :D But the range has got so bad on my old i3 I'm chomping at the bit for a proper range EV.
Steve Martin
Steve Martin 7 oy oldin
@HeliDragon510 & vvjkumar ...I also am a RWD holdout. I'm in no hurry whatsoever, and am actually a bit uncomfortable with taking the car too soon; so the LR-RWD "confusion" is fine with me. Wife and I BOTH got M-3s last summer. We then pre-ordered one M-Y, wanting the bonus size and anticipating a TOWING OPTION. Betting on "Elon time," we thought we'd know more about FSD coming into view (or not) before our M-Y would be ready--expecting our time would be around summer of 2021. Tesla chat told me 10 days ago "there is no plan to offer towing at this time," and FSD software roll-out is apparently a few months away and holding. I'm happy to wait a bit to see what unfolds!

Ryan. You can add the 7-SEAT option to the list. I have a red AWD 7-seater with white interior on order. I too was able to fill out everything and now have the “Prepare for Delivery” message. Fingers crossed...

How do you get the Performance Model but without the Performance Package which reduces the range but still have Black Induction wheels?
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
It’s either the 19 inch or 21 inch wheels for performance unfortunately

I do in my other videos. But I feel that one conversion of 7 inches isn’t the biggest deal haha

Good job Ryan! I'm glad that I don't have the stress of not knowing, because I'm married to my Model 3 for a long time to come and I don't want to give up the handling of a much lower roofline and at least an inch of battery height.

will the 19" or 20" wheel affect the range?
Ronan O'Neill
Ronan O'Neill 7 oy oldin
R Weight of the wheels is also a factor. Bigger wheels potentially means more weight. Bigger wheels aren’t as good in the snow and unfortunately the low profile tires don’t help with Michigan potholes so I chose the 19” Geminis

@R cause bigger wheels normally are wider. means more friction surface, means more energy needed to move. for example to save fuel costs, it's know to put more air in the tyres. if you have less air in your tyres, a bigger tyre surface is touching the street, which costs more energy. energy equals heat. put your hand on your tire, after driving fast. you'll feel the tyre being warm. heat equals energy.

Why would an extra 1" make a significant difference? Genuinely curious.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 7 oy oldin
Yeah it would make sense that it does, but they list 315 as the range for both
