I Fixed Tesla’s Terrible Paint Job on My Model Y

My Tesla Model Y came with quite a few paint issues and adulterations. When I took it to service, they did a poor job fixing the issues, so I took my Model Y to a detail shop.

I took my Tesla Model Y into Detail Union to get the paint fixed up, get a detailing, and apply a ceramic coating to protect the paint. This is a process that most detail shops in your area should be able to do. After doing it, I would recommend it to every Tesla buyer.
On my Model Y delivery day, I noticed two major areas on the front hood where the car was missing paint entirely or had a noticeable chip. These were areas that can't be buffed out, and need paint added to them, so I immediately scheduled service for these issues, as well as a few build issues.
Tesla service had it for 10 days and ended up sending it to a contracted body shop to fix the Model Y paint issues. While they did add paint where needed, the job was not great. Overall there were lots of Model Y swirl marks, and many Model Y paint defects. Certain areas looked almost worse than before the Tesla service center took it.
Then I took my Model Y to Detail Union in Monrovia, California. They walked me through the entire process and educated me on the Tesla paint process. This detail shop is special because they actually specialize in Teslas.
As far as Tesla's paint quality is concerned, it seems that their paint materials are high quality, but quality control is where they suffer. Comparing them to companies like Toyota, Tesla's paint quality control is pretty terrible. You don't notice it from a distance, but close up, you can really see where Tesla clearly messed up the paint and had to fix things after the fact. Luckily, since their materials are good, it is something that a Detail shop is able to work with and fix to make it look better than new.
Walking through the Model Y Detail process, this shop started by washing the car with what they call a Decon. This is a decontamination that consists of washing the car in detail multiple times with a foam bath, using mitts, spraying iron-x to remove any iron from the car when it was transported and use a clay bar to remove any specs that are stuck to the paint.
Then they took the Tesla Model Y inside and looked at it under the lights, and cleaned the Model Y interior. They showed me the swirl marks and many adulterations all over the car that clearly show where Tesla had messed up and tried to fix the paint. They also measured the paint and noticed a lot of variation. My Model Y Paint depth was a range from 2.8-8.9, which is extreme. Most cars have some variation but typically sit in the 4-5 range. The higher numbers mean they have a lot to work with, and the lower numbers mean they have less to work with and need to be careful.
Then they use a cutting pad to remove the clear coat and polish the areas to smooth and polish any swirl marks present on the car. The paint of my Model Y wasn't atrocious overall, but there were some areas they had to spend a lot of time on to look right. They went over every inch of the car, and paint corrected where necessary.
The last step is the Model Y ceramic coating, and this is actually the easiest step. Since they have already washed and detailed the entire car, they just need to apply the ceramic coating by hand. The ceramic coating I got is by Ceramic Pro and should last 2 years protecting the paint on the car.
In the future, I'd love to get a PPF (Paint Protection Film) on my Model Y, and this shop does that as well using Kavaca Paint Protection.
I learned a lot going to this detail shop and definitely plan to go there again. I also learned a lot about Tesla's paint process. Unfortunately, you aren't going to be getting the best paint job when you get your Tesla, especially if you are picky. Luckily, Tesla's paint material is good enough though, that a detail shop can work with it and make it look better than new. My Tesla Model Y definitely looked better than the delivery day when I picked it up from the detail shop.

Ryan, some questions about protecting the paint on your car. As you have just bought the car the paint was quite new and not hardened fully I presume. Did the people who did this job warn you about the paint being fresh? Does it make any difference applying a ceramic coat on a fresh coat of paint or on a hardened paint? Did applying a ceramic coating so soon have any impact on your warranty?

I’ve only had my S since January 2020 and I am shocked at how many chips in my paint I have. Every time I get on the interstate I get some new ones. Right now I probably have over 50. I paid $1500 extra for the paint job in black and I think the paint must be very poor quality not to handle small rocks flying up. I had an entire fleet of drivers Ed cars for 12 years, eight to be exact and we didn’t deal with this type of damage to our vehicles. Very poor quality paint.

Nice video and info you do a great job! But I'm thinking... you got a NEW car $$$$$ and you already have to fix paint?! That would not on acceptable on any GM, Ford, Toyota , BMW, etc. Maybe you should have bought a used one... let someone else sort through all these headaches!!!... lol. Why do I have feeling the QC department came from FIAT? Let us know if you see Tesla parts falling off while driving.. it maybe a sign!...lol

Megan Reeves 5 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw I'm very impressed with what you've done detailing it and learned so much. I think I remember your detail shop was in California as am I. I wonder if you can expect the defects that you had in the white as well as the red. I would assume it's just a crap shoot, giving you paid $2,000 extra for the red you would think that the paint would matter more. The whole quality issue is driving my husband insane. He just thinks the fit and finish is abysmal. It seems like it's a reasonable trade off and that the quality is becoming better and better.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 5 oy oldin
@Megan Reeves Honestly it was timing. I tracked down a red one that was available, and the white wouldn't have been available for a couple of months. Plus, I always wanted red, but didn't want to pay the extra cost. When the opportunity came up, I went for it and was really happy. Red is my favorite color and I love the car. White does look great in person though, so if color doesn't matter too much to you, I'd probably save the money and stick with white

Hello you are forgetting the inside and under the body of the car where it is difficult to see. Is it any paint there? Is it really nessesarry to use a clay bar on the car? How many miles have you driven? Tar on the body surface take a lot of time to build up. It would have been interesting to see you had the car filmed from the underside. Hope you do a follow up video. I see this method of snow foaming a lot in American detailing videos and it still makes me uncomfortable. The whole purpose of snow foaming is to 'pre wash'. It loosens the dirt and pulls it off the car as you say, but to then go straight at it with a mitt without any prior rinsing is a bad a idea. You're just dragging that loosened dirt across the paint.

A new car requires absolutely no mechanical decontamination (clay bar) and there is no benefit of foaming it 3 times, (the reason to do this is to soften any dirt and dust so that it will not scratch when the wash mitt is applied) they foamed it repeatedly so that they could charge you more, because they know people who buy Tesla’s don’t know much about cars, don’t go back there. Spend 5 minutes watching Chicago auto pros, the detail geek, chromatic auto detailing, etc and they all foam one time and refuse to clay a brand new car.

I wonder how ceramic coating compares to simply doing a wash with a good soap that has wax in it (like Chemical Guys), wax washes off yeah, but here in California we get rain 1 month out of the year... and if you wash your car once every few weeks you will definitely have the wax on it the entire time from just doing the wash. I feel like wrapping/PFF arent worth it, as you can just wrap or repaint the car for probably around the same amount of money (maybe even cheaper) by the time the factory paint actually starts wearing through or having issues. I did not do anything to my factory paint (and I have black) and its been perfectly fine. Also, a note on the wax washing off part, in our So Cal weather, it definitely lasts upwards a year, at least mine does.
Andrei
Andrei 5 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw well, so there is waxing after a wash and there is just using a soap that has wash already in it... so no extra effort other than washing needed. Thats what I am curious about, I dont know (and am curious) about how effective that wax is, if its just part of the wash.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 5 oy oldin
It’s essentially the same, but doesn’t wear off. Wax will wear off in the sun in California. If you wash once a week and wax, I suppose it could be the same. Sounds like a lot of work haha. Well the PPF or wrap protects more than a repaint would. A repaint will get complicated with big rock chips, but obviously I didn’t go for PPF haha, it’s pricey

Ryan Shaw I’ve found 6 square shaped patterns of what looks like adhesive residue on the inside of the glass roof (not really that noticeable unless looking up through the roof in sunlight). I assume there was some protective covering attached on the inside of the glass after it was built and for transport. I’m wondering if I can safely use rubbing alcohol to try to remove. I assume the dealer prep folks were supposed to take care of this prior to releasing the car to me. Any thoughts on this - did you notice anything like this in yours? They are evenly spaced on both sides of the glass in pairs 2 forward 2 middle 2 aft. About 3 inch square I’d estimate. The manual has a lot of restrictions on what to use to clean the interior including the glass....

I love my Model 3, it was one of the first 9300 made, but there's been a lot of work put into it. Nothing that affects reliability, everything that's been fixed has been cosmetic or an annoyance, but it has been a *lot*. Both headlights, both front upper control arms, steering rack, some chrome trim (SC damaged while replacing windshield), the back window (back when there were stress crack issues), had to have basically the whole car repainted, dashboard has had to be touched up due to damage from the SC, both front a-pillar covers had to be replaced (originally because they were warped, a common issue with early 3's, but then needed replacing because while fixing the dashboard, they damaged the pillars)...i think that's it.

And this is why for Giga Berlin they need to reinvent themselves with regards to the quality finish on the paint if like Elon has suggested the paint workshop will be a huge step forward. If Toyota are the best then Tesla needs to aim for that. I know Aston Martin are outstanding with regards to how the Car arrives to you but then they are not a mass production kind of manufacturer and every car is detailed and inspected before sign off. Your wrong with the Wax it lasts four to six weeks and takes an hour if that to reapply after washing and drying in a months time, if you think people have been doing it for years for it to only last a few days then 🤷🏼‍♂️ You can build up coats of wax to add protection further and to add to the wet look. The wax thing just came over as a technician talking balls because they don’t do it. 😁 I enjoy waxing the Car it’s almost therapeutic and very easy to do but if you don’t have the time or a Driveway then fair enough. PPF I fully understand it just works on so many levels from stone chips, fallout and damage from scratching deliberately or mistake.
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 5 oy oldin
All good stuff! And either way I guess the point if the wax is that it doesn’t last long.

I really do appreciate honest & unbiased opinions about what is good and what is bad about Tesla cars! I hate it with fanboyism kicks in! Not highlighting those issues will never make Tesla even better ;) Good Job Ryan! Waiting for M3 still :(

Well I guess I'll be driving my G35 awhile longer because I've lost faith in Tesla's ability to deliver a car without paint and fit issues. I'm kinda appalled! There's a detailer with a good rep in Fremont and I guess having paint correction is something to just figure you'll need when purchasing a Tesla. From the videos I've seen, I don't plan on letting Tesla touch it after delivery. Elon: How about fixing this mess!!!!! Thanks for the video and looks like you hooked up with the right detailer. Love all the details you had on the process.
Rick9482
Rick9482 5 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw I haven't driven one yet although I've been wanting one for about 6 months. Paint issues aside, my biggest issues is having a perfectly capable car right now which wouldn't be worth much on trade in now because of age. Just hate to let it go for a song! 12 year old G35 that's a better car today then any new car previously purchased. Hopefully, paint issues will improve when they're up an running again. Right now in California the DMV is closed for business so I cannot even get an expired license renewed, which is an issue when buying a new car. Anyway, I'm using various minor issues to delay purchase awhile longer. Spending that kind of money and having to go to a detailer for paint issue repairs really rankles.
Ryan Shaw

Have you driven a Model 3?
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 5 oy oldin
Yeah, it’s unfortunate. For me, the car is 100% worth it. It drives incredible and autopilot is a life changer, but especially to those used to luxury cars, the cost won’t make sense when you see the issues. The biggest hurdle for Tesla in my opinion
Peter Cimone

For the money they want for their cars you'd think the fit and finish would be better than a Hyundai but it isn't
SWR
SWR 5 oy oldin
Rick9482 Same would not touch an American made Tesla ( no offence intended to the hard working workforce over there) but the finish seem to be really poor and I notice things like this so would be annoyed. Will Giga Berlin raise the Bar - fingers crossed. Tesla are smart the obviously know the finish on the Cars are lacking, no point having best tech this and best batter pack that if the Customer is looking at issues and disappointed. The engineering seems let down by the fit and finish and that needs addressed, it’s probably an issue born out of this needing to pump out silly numbers of Cars at any cost.

Wow! They sure did a nice job on your car. I feel like I am splurging when I get a touch-less car wash with spray wax at the Auto Spa for $14. It looks great afterwards though. I am amazed at the amount people are spending on car finishes these days.

Did the paint correction, PPF and tint on the front and windshield. The paint was pretty bad and it took 5 days but it looks fantastic. The front picks up every bug out there on the toll roads in the OC. I use Adam's Polishes products for keeping the car clean inside and out.

PPF is a lot. It’ll depend on the shop but for the whole car I’ve heard prices from $4000-6000. An option would be to get just the front bumper to prevent rock chips, but I’m not sure how much that is.

YAY! I'm glad you get some paint correction and coating. I know for a fact its a must. I wash and wax my car and I am seeing that the protection from the manufacture isn't enough. I am looking. hey did a pretty good job on your Model Y. I don't think you need a pressure washer for your foam gun. On amazon have other products and its cheap. If you look at PanTheOrganizer on UZpost, he is the guy for products. Mr Red looks awesome, you didn't say what you named your car tho.

@Ryan Shaw If you want to go cheap, a lot of people go with the Sun Joe SPX3000 pressure washer. I like to get the best so I got the Kranzle pressure washer from Obsessed Garage with the MTM foam gun and the stainless steel quick disconnects. It's great, made in Germany. Nano 3D Super Soap is a great soap to use and it foams fantastically in a foam cannon. www.autogeek.net/3d-super-soap.html

Yeah! It’s definitely a great process to get done. Weirdly Excited to wash my car a lot haha. I’ll probably end up getting a pressure washer anyway haha. I have the chemical guys foam blaster for a normal hose and it isn’t quite the same. And thanks! I named the car Cliff

Both my wife and I’s Teslas (2018 X 100D and 2018 S P100D) had similar issues with chipped/missing paint in corners where body panels meet, clearly damage done during the build process and then still passed final inspection. Given that both were well over $100,000, that’s simply unacceptable

My Model Y has many of the same issues described in the video. I have an appointment scheduled with Tesla to address them and then plan to have a detailer do the correction/protection steps described i the video. Would it be better to skip the visit with Tesla and just bring the car to the detailer? I’m predisposed to want Tesla to correct their sloppy workmanship, but I don’t want to make the problems worse.

Well, I feel that if paint is missing, you should still have tesla fix it, since they have the touch up paint, and it’s their responsibility. You might not even notice the swirls unless you’re in the right light, or perhaps your service center could do a much better job.

I haven't seen any paint issues on my new Tesla Model 3 (white) just from watching closely around the car. If i can't see anything, that's fine for me. A professional could maybe see many small paint issues, but i don't care AT ALL. If i can't see them, where's the problem? I have the car to drive it, not to always search for tiniest paint issues. Maybe with a process like yours the paint could be much better, but after 1 year of driving the chance of getting small rock chips or something else is pretty high (i already have one at the front having the car for only 5 months). So sooner or later your car will have scratches and noticeable paint issues. Of course, your car looks amazing now, but spending hundreds of dollars just that you know you don't have any paint issues, is nothing for me. That's my opinion on this topic :)
El Romolus
El Romolus 5 oy oldin
@Ryan Shaw Of course, if you can see them directly it's something else. I think it's the same like when you buy a new phone. In the first weeks you take much care of it, but that won't last forever. Same with cars, however the time period is maybe a few months. After the first rock chips you more love it because it's a Tesla and not because the paint is flawless :D
Ryan Shaw
Ryan Shaw 5 oy oldin
Yeah, mine had issues I could notice, and then I immediately could see the swirls in sunlight. I want to take care of it as best I can, and make it truly last, but everyone has their own opinion of course! A dirty Tesla is still an incredible car

Don't get a pressure washer just for this. Go to a local self-service car wash. Here in Washington state we have Brown Bear, it's cheap, has all the materials, and it's super convenient (zero set up, maintenance, or clean up). Just park the car, take the hose - set it to foam, water, high pressure wash, etc... and spray away.

Ryan Shaw 5 oy oldin
You gotta know what you’re doing for it though! Would hate to see a first time car buyer mess up their car. For those materials though, you’re at least looking at $300? (Including a pressure washer). This process was $990, but your own materials do last for more washes of course.
